I hate glass lids for just that reason....I only have 2 pots with glass lids....and I store the glass lids in the waaay back of a deep cupboard and use metal lids that fit the pots.

Last week I took a pot of soup somewhere in my big soup pot with the glass lid.....and dug out the glass lid just for "pretty". When I got home, I washed the pot and hid the lid again!!

I store glass lids with the pots, but I do not have that many of them, and they go into a slide-out shelf in the base cabinet below my island. You have to open both doors to the cabinet because the slide-out shelves are double wide. I put the lids upside down on the pots, and then they are stackable. The pans are roughly rectangular, and so other lids do not fit on them.

Like most of you, I have way too many pot and pan lids, many are redundant. I found the solution at IKEA. These lids fold flat consequently they take up little storage space. I got one in each size. I used them for about six months to see which traditional lids I needed and which I could replace with these flat universal lids. Love them!!!

Linda C, I hate them too, always worried about breaking them but they came with the set. Maybe I'll replace them as part of organizing. Mustangs, the fold down lid is a great idea, I'd buy them if they were all metal! Why did they have to put a glass insert in there... Lars, wish I had an island like that with extra storage. There's never enough storage space, is there?

Not really. Glass lids are tempered glass or heat treated(strengthened)glass. They don't break that easy.

Personally I don't "see" the purpose of glass lids. You can't see thru them. They are always fogged up with water droplets.

Dcarch, I was just thinking that I don't see the purpose either. It doesn't hurt to take the lid off to look because the only lids that you can leave on are the ones that are vented to let steam out, anyway. If the lid isn't vented, you have to put it on half-cocked or it will boil over. The glass lids are heavier than metal, too.

I don't have much storage space in my kitchen for pots and pans, so I have a pot rack and I hang them on outward-facing hooks. I don't think pot racks are really in fashion anymore, but I ordered this one years ago from the blacksmith at Williamsburg Pottery, so it's kind of special to me.

I store most of mine in a lidrack that sits on a shelf in my corner revolving cabinet. Others are upside down in the pots on a shelf. No, I will never have enough cabinet space and unlike Cathy I am not organized. Never was, never will be. Didn't get that gene.

Went looking on Amazon for lidracks and potracks and found dozens of them, mostly made of coated wire. I'm going to have to get out all the pots and pans and count up the lids and start ordering or checking stores. Thanks for the ideas!

Mine are stored as Lars said.
The lid is on the pan upside down,
And they are stacked.
Always have the right lid for the pan that way.
My Corning ware is stored the same way.

Can't say as I've had any problems with breakage, either.
So Dcarch must be right,
about them being made of tempered glass.

I happen to like glass lids.
Have never had a problem seeing through them.
Even when they are covered with water droplets,
One can still tell how well the contents are simmering,
Or sizzling, as the case may be.

Rusty, I'm like you both in the stacking, and on using glass lids.
I have one glass lid that I love for rice, so I can see that the rice is cooking low enough. Even when I use it for boiling, it's a handy lid to see the action.

I have only lower cupboards for my pans and lids, so I just open the door and toss them into the back. No one sees the inside of my cupboards except me anyway.

I do have one glass lid for a two quart copper pot and I really like both the pot and the lid. It gets tossed in just like everything else.

My big 8 quart pot goes on top of the refrigerator with the colandar and that's where the lid goes too. I can't see up there anyway and have to have a chair to get it down.
