Farmer's Market

| I'm finally licensed. Working out of a commercial kitchen, passed the safe food handling exam.
I don't have a store front but can sell at the local Farmer's Market. Problem is, I don't know what to sell.
Shelf life is a problem and there isn't a refrigerator at the Market.
Soooooo, what should I offer for sale? Thanks. |

Bread....rolls, cookies for starters. I see lots of people selling out of coolers. Things like containers of spaghetti sauce or home made soups. Any how it would be a start. Linda C |

| What about a regional soup? Or your "own special recipe" for Italian Wedding Soup, Chicken Noodle, Chicken and Dumplings, Chili, etc. My friends are selling their Brunswick Stew at $6.50 a quart. They have a crock pot heating stew for $2 a bowl plus free samples, then they have a big cooler filled with chilled quarts of stew to take home and heat. |

| use a couple of large coolers with lots of ice and offer the buyer a couple of handfuls of ice to keep the product you sell cool, i buy fresh fish and my vendor always put a handful or two in a separate plastic bag the puts my fish in it. |

| I've thought about doing that - but I suspect where I am in Northern CA it would be too expensive to rent a commercial kitchen to make it worthwhile. Did you get an inexpensive kitchen to use? Bonnie |

| I found a commercial kitchen for $250/month for 10 hours per week. I am in Orlando. That was doable for me. I've been wanting to do this for as long as I could remember. |

| What do you most enjoy making? Usually the answer to that question will give a 'starting point' in figuring out what to make for sale. Have you checked the market you will be selling at? What do other food vendors offer? What seems to be good sellers for them? I'm sure you wouldn't want to copy them, but perhaps checking them out would give you some ideas of your own. Maybe some cakes in the small 8" square pans, such as Carrot cake, German Chocolate, Italian Creme, etc. Good luck! Rusty |

| What do you make that you consider a specialty of yours? Something really good that would bring people back. That, and a price point that returns you a reasonable profit should be your guide. $25 an hour for you kitchen space, plus the price of ingredients, plus your time, cost of your market space and still cheap enough that people find good value. That ought to shorten your list! I think people are willing to pay a premium for homemade stuff that can be time consuming to make. Soups, sauces, stocks, pot pies, stews etc. |
