remote oven temperature probe?

I have vision problems and have GREAT trouble reading the oven temperature off one of the devices that hang on a rack.

But even my 26 year old grandson has to kneel in front of the oven and shine a flashlight on the thermometer to read it through the door.

Is there a remote oven temperature probe I can use in my otherwise wonderful Capital Culinarian? I would LOVE one I could just leave in place or easily remove and replace.

I have a thermapen which does a great job on reading the temp of foods, but I NEEd something to check oven temp.

Would someone who knows about these things please go to the Oregon Scientific website and help me choose which remote sensor would best work for me? I went to the site to look, and was lost. 100 ft. should be plenty far enough and I could it set up on a window sill that faces my GH, with no radio, TV or telephone in between. The signal would have to pass through 3 panes of glass, but if angeled just so, it would otherwise have a clear line of sight to the GH. I know some signals mess up TV reception. We always know if we forgot to turn off the electric fence when we sit down to watch the 6 pm News. Would the fence have the same effect on the sensor?

According to the service manual f13 means either your probe is shorted or the socket it plugs into is shorted. This is why it only happens when trying the probe. The probe is the same that is used with most ovens or microwaves so you might have another one laying around to try or your neighbor might have one. Trying a different probe will let you know if it is the socket or the probe.

Good to know. IIRC when I used the probe for a meal I was happy with it, but yesterday when I was testing it to be sure I was explaining the display correctly I noticed that it displayed 135 in a cup of water, and checked it against my Thermapen which I trust, and that read 143. I might be being generous here, but perhaps there's some corrective logic built in because over time the metal of the probe will conduct heat faster than the meat will. I'll pay closer attention the next time I use it for real. Either way, good to note the ovens display to one degree.

Ci_lantro: I looked at the video. It is interesting that for all the cable probes, he never shows the sensor on the cable. They might all look alike but not even once? I logged in and left my request to see if anyone can land the thermometer I seek. Here is what I posted: ============================================== OK, I was referred to this site from the Cooking section of houzz/GardenWeb. I have had a hate/hate relationship with oven thermometers especially with the cable probe units. I would like a recommended unit that does not make me do finger calisthenics in order to get it to work. I want to spend my brain power preparing a meal, not working for a lame probe designer. (Forgive me, I am venting here...) I never need presets or multi-function buttons that depend on which mode it is in, Do I need a clock? No but maybe someone can fill me in if one is useful and it has better be very easy to set. The alarm for the set temperature is to sound when the probe reaches the set temperature and stop chiming if the temperature drops below the set threshold. An indicator can be on the screen but it is not to interfere with the alarm. This allows me to use it not only for low temperature cooking as well as other situations that I want to monitor such as outside temperature to protect my plants. It may be possible that I want the alarm to continue when the temperature but at least give me a choice.. Conversation is welcome... Also, if I can get in touch with a designer of the probe then I have an idea that is not found on any other probe and will bring the functionality to a height that no one company has. Obviously I am not going to spell it out here but if someone can get in touch with me we can make a deal.

I got DH a version of the one dcarch posted, for slow cooking/smoking on the Weber and monitoring grill temp as well as food temp. I've used it in my Nesco, too.

We love the thing!

BTW,

There is no such thing as wireless thermometer. They are almost wireless.

The transmitter electronics has to be outside of the oven and connected by heat resistant wire to the probe inside the oven.

The receiver is wireless.

I decided to buy the more recent version of the one Dcarch linked. Only $10 more on Amazon. I THINK I can figure out how to program it without too much trouble ;-)

It should be here tomorrow. I don't own Amazon either, but I sure do appreciate Amazon Prime's fast free delivery.

Dcarch, Yeah, I know only the remote is wireless. I doubt I will use that very often for the range oven. Nice for the BGE, though.

Be careful with cleaning the probe. Many of them, type K, are not water proof.

They are moisture resistant.

After some great input from the Appliance Forum and this forum, here is where I am now:

Thanks to everyone for the great info. I feel I finally have an idea of the kinds of oven thermometers available. Duh! I always thought they had to be little round things that hung on racks.
Posters in the Appliance forum suggested a Thermoworks TW8060 thermometer and the Cole-Palmer website. I have several different Thermoworks thermometers and timers which I love. (Love the new backlit thermapen!) The Cole-Palmer ones look great as well.

I especially like the MODEL #TX-1200 for its simplicity of operation and the fact that I can use different probes with it. Since I have several Thermoworks probes already, that will be a plus. I also like the idea of leaving the probe in the oven instead of inserting and removing it with each use. The nice long cable (47") may make that easy to do.

Although I have already ordered the Maverick ET733, I may also order the #TX-1200 thermometer with the additional TX-1003X-AP probe and see which I prefer. And may keep both.

For grilling on the BGE, the ET733 may be worth its price if the wireless remote works as advertised.
Really nice if I could accurately monitor grill temperature from inside the house. Never even considered the possibility of that! So maybe both the Maverick and the Thermoworks will find a home here.

Dcarch, I noticed for the first time that the Thermoworks TX-1002X-NP probe cable can be immersed in water at the probe end to monitor SV cooking. $16 for a reliable check on the Sous Vide temperature gauge would be a bargain.

I bought our Maverick on 6/13 and it still performs perfectly. The remote monitoring is wonderful and probably DH's favorite thing!

Ooooh, I'm a little jealous of your stash. I just bought the Thermapen for DH as a Christmas gift. He resists tech when cooking but I love it and the delicious results. He comes around after first use, though! No more medium steaks when you want medium-rare.

I got two from their buddy sale. The other is for my friend who always hosts Thanksgiving. I'm hoping she'll use it on the bird and listen to me regarding when to pull it from the oven. I suspect that she's still using 185 as her target temp, or something close. She can be phobic about food safety and tends to err on the side of over doing it. She's known for being a very good cook, though, so maybe it's just that her dial gauge takes longer to register properly and she's going with a lower temp than it actually is. She'll like it for her grilling, too, I think.
