Bluebird Eggs haven't hatched 21 days since eggs were found
Comments (15)Very odd things happening with my houses this year. I had bluebirds in one house that laid 5 eggs. For the most part I try to stay away so they don't get spooked. In this case the next time I checked there was one fledgling that I saw but he didn't seem ready to fly away yet. But when I checked 2 days later there were no babies or eggs. The nest was empty. This box was protected with the mesh on the opening. I'm hoping time just flew by and the brood hatched and fledged in my absence! Will the parents start a new brood in the same nest or should I clean the box out for them to start over? I had another box that had activity, 5 eggs layed and a week later no eggs or babies. I fear they were killed since it was an old house from last year and it did not have the protective metal mesh at the opening. I have a nest nearby with the mesh protection. I kept checking and there was no activity or eggs. Then suddenly there was one egg!! I assumed the mom would lay more. I checked for 2 days, still only one egg. The third day the egg hatched with a tiny bald with a little fuzz baby bird. I kept watching from a distance and I did not see the male or female going into the house. I skipped looking inside the box today. I wanted to stay totally away. Tomorrow I will check again. I hope the little guy is okay.... Is it unusual for a female to lay only one egg? I'm thinking that perhaps the pair that were in the other box moved to this box when a predator got their other eggs..... Thus only one last egg to lay??? The box with the one egg is about 20 feet from the empty box. Perhaps this is part of that brood? Can the mom or dad move an egg or did she just lay it in a different box?? I have another box about 100 feet from that one protected with the mesh that some sparrows have taken over. They have built a nest and hang out in front of it on the mesh opening and on top of it but no eggs for well over a month. Perhaps they are the culprits that got the 5 bluebird eggs. Very strange that they built a nest and aren't using it. I know they will build several, one as a decoy or to give the female a choice, but I don't see that they've done that unless they are planning to take over the bluebird box. Comments (20)Stuffing Recipe (Dressing Recipe, technically) 1 1/2 pounds bulk Italian sausage 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 ounces pancetta bacon, diced 2 onions, chopped 7 large stalks celery, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 6 cups day-old French bread, cut into 1/2 inch cubes 3 cups crumbled cornbread 1 1/2 tablespoons rubbed dried sage 1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup toasted pine nuts 4 cups chicken broth 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup butter 2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage 1 ounce shaved Parmesan cheese Directions Preheat an oven to 375 degrees. Grease a deep 9x13 inch baking dish or roasting pan. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and stir in the sausage. Cook and stir until the sausage is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink. Drain and discard any excess grease. Place the browned sausage into a large mixing bowl. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil and pancetta in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the pancetta begins to brown, stir in the onions and celery, and cook until the onion softens and turns translucent, about 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic, and cook another 3 minutes until the aroma of the garlic mellows. Scrape the onion mixture into the bowl with the crumbled sausage. Add the French bread, cornbread, dried sage, poultry seasoning, salt, and pine nuts; stir well. Pour in the chicken broth and mozzarella cheese; stir until the chicken stock has been absorbed by the bread and the stuffing is evenly mixed. Pack the stuffing into the prepared baking dish, and dot the butter overtop. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, then remove the foil, and continue baking until the top has turned golden brown, about 15 minutes more. All Rights Reserved. yield: 2 servings Level: Easy Ingredients 2 wedges light spreadable Swiss cheese (recommended: The Laughing Cow Light), room temperature 1 zucchini, ends removed, finely diced 2 large portabella mushrooms, stems chopped and reserved 1 teaspoon finely chopped onion 1/2 teaspoon chopped garlic 1/8 teaspoon salt Dash ground thyme Black pepper 1/2 tablespoon reduced-fat Parmesan-style grated topping Directions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. In a bowl, combine cheese wedges, zucchini, chopped mushroom stems, onion, garlic, salt, and thyme. Add pepper, to taste. Mix until smooth. Set aside. Lay a large piece of heavy-duty foil on a baking sheet. Lightly spray both sides of the mushroom caps with olive oil nonstick spray, and place next to each other on the foil with the rounded sides down. Spoon veggie-cheese mixture into the mushroom caps-there will be a lot, so pack it in! Sprinkle with grated topping. Place another large piece of foil over the caps. Fold together and seal all four edges of the two foil pieces, forming a well-sealed packet. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 23 to 25 minutes, until mushrooms are tender. Allow the packet to cool for a few minutes, and then cut it to release steam before opening it entirely. (Careful-steam will be hot.) If you like, season with additional salt and thyme, to taste. You also have the option of using fake meat crumbles and fake ham, that you can get in the freezer section or perhaps the fridge section next to the produce, which is where I find that kind of stuff at a lot of markets. You can use one or both. The fake meat crumbles you can get almost anywhere, it's TVP. I like Morningstar Farms brand or Bocca also has this item. My favorite fake ham is Yves brand....See Morelindac
