Whole Fresh Raw Ham Brine or Not?

partst

While out grocery shopping DH spotted fresh hams and insisted we bring one home. I had the butcher find me the smallest one he had it's about 12lbs. Years ago he cooked one for a family Christmas that got raves from all the in laws and out laws. We both remember brining it for something like 24 hours but neither of us remembers what he put in the brining solution.

After looking around the web I see everything from simple salt and sugar to some with lots of spices, maple syrup, and brown sugar. What I want is a simple salt, sugar solution but I don't have a clue as to the proportion everything I'm seeing varies quit a lot. Do I even need to brine this? I tried the search but you know how that is. Any ideas will be appreciated.
