 o
what to do with 'old' berries?

Posted by natalija_gardener (My Page) on

Hi!
I took out 2 pounds of blackberries out of the freezer to get something else out and then accidently forgot to put them back in the freezer again. Then my husband found them in the garage and they smell like wine now.
Is there any way I can do something with them? Can I make jam or something?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I'd make jam. I did a quick search and found that you were not alone in finding yourself with fermenting berries.

How long were they sitting in the garage, out of the freezer?

I would dry them and make potpourri with them. It is quite nice if you choose your favorite oil.

Have you tasted them? Do they taste as though they are fermenting or do they leave an after taste, like a mildew? I find our native berries to be somewhat fragile at room temp. If I discovered them thawed but cold I'd use them but you'll have to decide - you don't say how many days have passed.
