LPink - I make them every year - the Hungarian version. The potato dough is VERY forgiving and just make sure you seal them completely so they don't leak. When they float, they are done!

Too late Alexa, unfortunately. Maybe someday we can hook up for a hands on lesson! That would be so groovy!

They turned out awful, just as I expected. Dough too thick, gummy, rubbery, and the thickest ones were the ones that leaked! Plus I used store bought bread crumbs and I should have known better--they tasted stale. Probably not helpful either that I used instant mashed potatoes. All in all, yuck! My mom was so funny, in a fashion typical for her, she said, "At least the plums were good." And my dad said, "Just reheat them later with more sugar and a lot of whipped cream on top."

BF is going to have to get by with plum grunt or slump, that's more my style! Once again, the newer generation can't hold a candle to grandma!

Oh Lpink I am so disappointed for you!

I haven't made them in forever but I just make a standard peirogi dough and seal it around pitted Italian style plums.

I serve it warm with a topping made from sour cream mixed with a bit of sugar.

Better luck next time but a cooking lesson at Alex's sounds like a plan!

Yes they might have turned out better had I halved the plums and folded the dough like pierogis. At least I would have been in somewhat familiar territory. But BF was bragging about these dumplings his grandmother made with a whole peach! He said that he too tried to replicate them and his were also a disaster.

Lpink, I use whole pitted Italian plums...you know those smaller oval shaped ones...they don;t need to be cut in half.

LPink - I am sorry that it was not a success, they are a once a year treat here that my family and friends all look forward to... I use the small Italian plums too, but I pit them and fill the center with cinnamon sugar - hence the caution about leakage. (Channeling Beevis & Butthead... "She said Leakage")

When the plums are in season next August - you are on! I also make them with apricots, maybe BF has a fuzzy memory and that is what his G-mother made? And anytime you want to come down, we can make them with apricots, since they are a little easier to find off season. Oh, and bring BF - I would love to meet him too!

I got my plums too late to find the Italian type ones in the store. I would make him the grunt or slump and enjoy it and call it a day, but then I would have to hear (once again!) him waxing poetic about his grandmother's mythical peach ones! Maybe they were actually apricot! I love those little Italian plums for baking and jams! I did manage to make a great crostada with them once.

For quite a while after my first husband and I married, he kept telling me "Jenny didn't make it that way", etc. Jenny was his step-mother. Well, I finally wrote to Jenny to ask her what to do. Her response was to write and tell him to stop saying that because we were two different people and there were different ways to fix things. The remarks stopped after that. The second time around came almost 40 years ago when I married my second husband and the only thing he has ever said was he'd sure like some fried apple pies like his mother used to make. I don't feel bad about it because all the females who knew his mother said they tried and couldn't do it. I haven't tried - yet. When I made Apple Pie Jam, he said that it would make a fried apple pie filling like his mother used to make, so I might try it.

L, I'm sorry those didn't turn out better. (sigh) I'm no help, I've never made plum dumplings like that.

Grandma made plum dumplings, but she made a sweetened dumpling dough (not the sliders, the big puffy dumplings) and dropped them onto boiling plum filling. I liked them a lot and they are very easy, but not what the BF is thinking of, unfortunately.
