Pnut oil

Can someone help here/ We use peanut oil in or turkey fryer and also for frying doughnuts. Of late it seems like the oil does not get as hot as the thermometer records and our doughnuts are greasy. Is it possible that the oil loses some of it's ability to heat ans therefore should be discarded?

Check your thermometer for accuracy first.

It is getting as hot but I am surprised that it isn't smoking long before it gets to temp. This is due to the accumulated stuff in the oil Once things start getting greasy you have no recourse except to replace the oil.

I have a built in deep fat fryer in my kitchen. What happens with oil after you have used it many times is it degrades and then it must be replaced . Here are some links to tips.

Basically my son the chef , I am here at his house now, says...when the oil gets s%^&y replace it ! c

Well, I'd say you have a camera worth having, for sure!! What cute squirrel pics.! They do get fearless if they get use to you for sure. Maybe, the folks living there previously fed them and tamed them abit for you! :o) We have one with about the same amount missing from his tail, too. We call him 'Stubby'! He probably is the most shy, but he may have good reason to be more wary, given the missing tail event that must have happened in a most frightful way for him! He will come, if I call, but he does not rush up so close. Does the little guy in your pics. have a swollen lip or jaw? It looks like it to me, in the pic. Probably an abcess if it is what it looks to be--very swollen. I bet he got a bite in a brawl with a foriegn squirrel coming into *his* territory or vice versa! They are VERY territorial, from what I've heard and seen! Or, it could be an abcessed tooth---Poor guy! Or, maybe just the angle of the pic.!!LOL Are you feeding them yet? They LOVE black oil sunflower seed and unsalted p-nuts! But, I bet you know that already! :o)

barb- I agree with sleevedog, there aren't any dumb questions. It's something you haven't experienced that you need/want to know, and this is a handy outlet for information from people you trust. BTW - I do use powdered stevia, and even grow stevia in my herb garden and use it in whole dried leaf, powder, and extract. Which one I use depends on what I'm adding it to. I get the liquid flavored stevia from Amazon or iHerb (there are probably many other sources for the same brands so look for best price and special offers). The brands I have on hand are NOW and SweetLeaf. I saw a display of Harvest Snaps at Wal-Mart and I thought how clever marketing was to place it in the produce section of the store to make you think you were eating healthy produce. If memory serves me, the one I looked at was green pea and was made from 70% whole peas. The good news, there weren't very many ingredients in the list - peas, rice, oil, citric acid, and maybe something else - a chemical preservative. At least it came in under 5-ingredients, which is one of my personal "food rules" when it comes to processed foods. Michael Pollen said it best in one of his books - eat all the junk food you want --- as long as you make it yourself. I make sweet potato chips at home in the microwave when we want the occasional chip to go along with a lettuce wrap, or cut some corn tortillas into wedges and bake them when I make guacamole or salsa. I make high-protein "crackers" with the pulp remaining from making nut milk and dehydrate them. Dehydrated apple slices and a few nuts or peanuts has always been a snack food available in our home. Believe me, if you have to do more then rip a bag open, you'll have and consume a lot less snacks (LOL). -Grainlady

I have all the modern equipment, and I just made a really good soup by just dumping stuff in a pot. No measures. I can make cake or bread just by estimating and adjusting. Same with a lasagna, quich or fruit pie. These are the kind of things most of those colonials made. They knew from experience how much to use. They also did have measures available. Some just used handfuls or pours for things they made daily, and did it by sight or feel, but we talk about ”cups” and ”teaspoons” because our forebears often used an odd teacup or a handy spoon as a measure. It makes it easier to replicate a good dish. A friend might have totally different measures, but one's own cup was the same. I know what's in my soup, but will never be able to make the same thing again because I have no idea how much of each ingredient. Back when, they also had measures like how much of an ingredient one could buy for a penny, or for other than staples, they might buy just enough by weight. Even though they might have to be quite well to do to have their own scales, the merchant would. If I'm making a recipe, I find weights far more accurate and reliable, especially for baking. If I were making peanut butter cups, rather than basic bread, I'd need to follow a good recipe too, and I'd choose one that lists by weight. Good luck with your project. I'm sure you'll be able to get them together so they can be enjoyed by those you give them too. They needn't be the ne plus ultra—they just have to taste good! I'm sure they'll be fine.

I still remember going out to celebrate my college graduation with my parents. In those days I was not allergic to seafood, and I ordered a shrimp salad something for lunch.. I was pretty sure that there was something wrong with it but I didn't want to complain, so I ate sparingly ( very unusual for me)... I realized a few years later that it was apparently made with Miracle Whip. Ewwww.

Can you tell me where you buy your p-nut oil? I used to be able to find it in large containers, but the last time I looked (for deep frying a turkey) all I could find was a 3? 5? gallon jug of some kind of mixed oil. I ended up buying it at an Asian market, but it was quite expensive and only available in quartish sizes.

We buy ours in a giant container at Costco. It's enough to fill the turkey fryer and costs about $35.

Walmart also sells it in a large size.

YOu might look into getting rice bran oil in bulk. It is even better for high heat and is used in Chinese restaurants due to the great high heat qualities that it has. It is also much more healthful. c

Look in Aldi around the holidays for p'nut oil. They've had it in 1 gallon size. I've been lucky the past two years and found it in Aldi after the holidays and marked down to clear out.

Don't know what part of the country you live in but Menard's will probably have it. Also, the outdoors' type stores like Gander Mtn, Cabela's & Bass Pro Shop usually stock it in those large 3-5 gallon containers.

Straining after using it will help prolong the life of oil. But when it starts foaming, it's time to toss it.
