What grease/oil for kitchen gaskets?

I have a new injector that I use for preparing turkeys for deep frying. It's stainless steel with rubber gaskets in all the critical places where liquid would leak out without them. My last one eventually leaked because the rubber had hardened so I'd like to keep this one lubricated, but am stumped about what to use on the gaskets between uses. Seems like food oil wouldn't be good and it would turn rancid, but of course I could wash it before use.

What would you suggest? Thanks for your help.

Food grade silicone is used for faucet cartridges, water filters, etc. but I'm not sure where to buy it locally. I use mineral oil to keep food grinder parts from rusting and I'm thinking this would work for your seals as well.

Thanks, I'll look into that and the rubber combo. I was hoping someone might have a suggestion of something I'd have on hand, so I could grease it up and put away off my counter without having to make a trip to the store (don't keep mineral oil around).

Thanks for all the help. I had time today to get most of the work done. I went a bit nuts (for me) and removed the deck so I could really clean the underside really well. Took a little longer than I planned, but generally went well. The grease part was pretty easy (thanks to all of your help.) I did not changes the fuel line (didn't really need to -- I read somewhere it was a good idea to change those after 5 years, but I have not had any real problems with it .. so I left it as-is.) One problem I did have -- I could not get the old oil filter off. Not sure if it just was tightened to hard last time, or not lubed enough around the gasket. I just went ahead and put the new oil in and moved on with the old filter (Kohler actually only recommends changing it every other oil change.) I have one of the band/clamp oil removal tools, but it's really hard to get any leverage with the tight area. I was going to spray some WD40 around it to see if would loosen it, but thought I would ask around if that was a good idea or not. Any thoughts? Are there any tools that are better for tight spaces? mc_hudd, I don't know if you're still wondering and if this helps, but I've been using dishwasher detergent for a long time as a laundry booster. I started with the Great Value brand from WalMart since it had a good rating on performance in dishwashers, it was cheap, did not have the lemon scent and did not have bleach. It also has enzymes in it which is what I was looking for. I now have been buying SunSations brand from Walgreens, Dollar Tree or wherever else I can get it for about $1/box. Again, has enzymes, no lemon or bleach, cheap and works well. No problem with the clothes. I use about a cup or so in my top loader. This was an idea from some of the old-timers in the forum years ago (seems like they've most all departed) and it's definitely a keeper. Lately I haven't really had to use much and I don't know whether to credit that I switched to Tide Sensitive Skin, perfume/dye free or whether I just don't get my clothes as dirty or a combination. Sometimes I'd let it soak a while before washing, sometimes not. I still haven't gotten around to trying STPP, which could be of some help. I know the old timers swore by STPP.

What works best on kitchen cabinet grease buildup?

The grease buildup requires an emulsifier to break it down. I would try Orange Oil, followed by a very hot water sponge rinse. Apply the Orange Oil cleaner with a soft paint brush and allow to soak for 5 minutes. Work slowly, one area at a time. Years of buildup doesn't come off in seconds. Begin removing with an open cell sponge, half loaded with hot water. A sea sponge works best.

The baffles act in the same manner as the beloved-by-some Vent-a-Hood squirrel cage blower: They extract the larger end of the grease particle spectrum by centrifugal extraction. If this is not taking place because the air speed is too low as the air follows the N-path of half of any pair of baffles, then [greasier then desired] greasy air ends up above the baffles. After centrifugal extraction, the main methods of depositing grease are impingement (due to duct turbulence) and condensation (hood and duct is colder than the plume). Slow air velocities enhance condensation and high air velocities favor impingement. I have never investigated hoods that act as grease traps by being, it seems from your description, one giant baffle pair. Sorry but it is too late tonight to start another quest.

First find out what material the gaskets are made of. If they are natural rubber, they can age by ozone in the air. If they are silicone rubber, they will not need any grease.

For natural rubber, mineral oil (food grade) can work. It depends, there are different kinds of mineral oil and different kinds of natural rubber.

For old natural rubber that does not seal anymore, you can rejuvenate by soaking the rubber in mineral oil for a few weeks. I have even used motor oil to rejuvenate rubber pressure cooker gaskets, Motor oil smells. After soaking, I boil the gasket a few times in dishwasher water .

For the gaskets on my canners and my cutting boards, I use a food grade mineral oil. I buy mine at the local pharmacy, as I also dose my cat and dog with it. It does not go rancid as most other oils will.
