Still a few things from the garden

WOW where are you that you're finishing up your summer stuff? I'm just getting tomatoes, cukes, zuks etc now! I'm in zone 8ish, No CA. Our season is running about a month late, but I have at least 3 months to go. I usually have one raised bed that finishes in time to clear for a winter bed. Usually the squash/cukes. I also have a perenial bed that I put winter stuff in just cause I don't do very much winter stuff. I also do things such as lettuce and radishes in boxes on the deck where I don't have to go out in the mud and muck during the rainy season. I haven't done seeds for a winter garden yet, but I'm thinking about a month fom now is about when you start from seed in my area. I think I have a site that tells you when to do what. Amaranthaceae Amaranthus retroflexus and Amaranthaceae Beta vulgaris. Okay, the B. vulgaris (beets) were planted whereas the A. retroflexus (redroot pigweed) is a self-sowing weed. The thinnings from the beets are the first veggie from outside the temporary hoophouse ... which will come down today. Here, the WS tells us that it was the warmest May in recorded history! It will be the earliest date for taking down the hoop house in it's intermittent 20+ year history of being up for the Spring months. High & Low temperatures were at the almost precise normals for the last day of the month, yesterday at 48° & 72°. Nevertheless, it will be warming up some, again soon. The weeds are enjoying the warmth, the few thunderstorms, the irrigation, and the cultivated ground in the Big Veggie garden. Many of the redroot were turned under yesterday by the rototiller over the paths. The weed was nearly beyond its prime! It is tasty but those little beet plants may be my favorite veggie. Crisp bacon and a quick cooking and they were appreciated for last night's dinner. Steve

So many factors go into whether veggies thrive or fail: sun, soil, weather, nutrition, pests & disease, and of course, variety. If you haven't been doing it for very long, it can take some time - and failures - to get to where you want to be. Don't give up 🙂 I used to be able to grow broccoli very easily, and I grew a number of varieties too, but the past few years have been failures of one sort or another. This year, it was insect pests, prior years it was animal pests - specifically possums ravaging the plants just as they were starting to bud. I want to give up, but I think I'll try again in the fall. I don't have any trouble growing Asian greens like tatsoi and pak choi in the cooler season. They do very well in Earthbox self watering containers. I grow lettuces that way too. You can get a lot of greens from one box planter. My growboxes are about 1ft X 3ft - approx. 30 cm X 1 meter. You might consider trying to grow your broccoli from seed - it's very easy to sow in place, and you can get a lot more plants for your money, but slugs & snails are a menace. I sprinkle iron phosphate snail bait around areas where I direct sow veggie seeds to help the sprouts survive.

Yes - how about that coffee table book ......

I harvested the last of my ginger root yesterday. Doesn't look as good as your pics and does not even look edible in this pic! Here is what I dug a couple weeks ago. Drinking a cup of ginger tea this morning.

Looks absolutely amazing, as usual.

But what do chrysanthemum greens taste like?
And why am I surprised that you are eating them?

I thought that nothing you do would surprise me anymore,
But somehow or another,
It just seems like these greens would be kind of bitter.
They sure do look good, though!

Thank you Teresa. Those ginger look very good. I bought some young ginger to pickle for sushi, but they turn out kind of fibery. I have to find room in my garden to grow some myself.

Thank you Rusty. Those are the eating kind of chrysanthemum greens. Chrysanthemum greens are very popular vegetable in many parts of the world. They are delicious and have many medicinal benefits.

What is going on. Do you live in Hawaii or something? It is November for gosh sakes. My garden packed it up long ago. I realize New York has had some warm winters of late, but I thought this winter was normal, i.e. cold and snowy, over most of the country?
