cake for a crowd

What was I thinking. Dreading yet another holiday function with supermarket cake and crisco frosting, I volunteered to make cake for a gathering of students in early December. There will probably be 40+ in attendance. It is the kick-off to finals, end of semester gathering.

I have never made a sheet cake, but it seems to me a sheet cake or two might be called for in this instance. Or would 3 9"x13" inch cakes be better?

If a sheet cake is the answer, what size pan do I need for a sheet cake? Do I use my "charm" covered sheet pans from an earlier post? Or should I buy some sheet cake pans?

And finally, I'd love some T&T recipes for sheet cakes if they are the answer. Thanks!
