It looks to me like a pan for baking Ukrainian paska or Russian kulich Easter breads.

Yes, but unless the photo in the OP is distorted, catherinet's pan is deeper and narrower than an angel food cake pan.

This was so interesting, I spent some time Googling. While I think you could successfully make paska or kulich in this, I found very few that were made in tube pans, and one of those was in a coffee cake ring, no doubt because that's what she had. Many are made in large cans, and in lovely bakeware that's the shape of cans, especially the kulich. Both are made in molds and forms with designs on them.

I found another picture of a slightly different pan, which wasn't quite as narrow, but had similar proportions. It was just labelled "deep tube pan" and that it was good for cakes.

Then I found a blogger who had one of the kind I'd found that was her new chiffon cake pan.

Then I found a list of bakeware dimensions, and what seemed to fit what I can guess from looking at the picture was a Kugelhopf pan. Most of them are fluted, and I haven't found it listed as such, but I saw pictures of Kugelhopfen that looked like they could have been baked in Catherinet's pan.

So that's my vote. Kugelhopf. Catherinet, have you ever had ambitions to make a Kugelhopf? :)

And, yes, I'm supposed to be working!

Aren't most Kugelhopf pans ceramic and prettily swirled? I've never seen a straight one. Perhaps it's an Alsacien thing? See the linkbelow for some pretty traditional ones;

IC, those are lovely! Most of the Kugelhhopf pans here are pretty well shaped like Catherinet's, but copper or aluminum with traditional fluting, swirls and other patterns, similar to the ceramic ones. However, as I said, I did see straight sided examples of the Kugelhopf cake that looked like they could have been baked in the pan in question. Kugelhopf is the progenitor of the Bundt cake, but usually is much taller and narrower. This is just a guess on my part. It's probably just a generic tube pan.

Oh, Islay, that is a naughty, naughty link. Now I am off to research Kugelhopf pans. Those are amazing.

The dimensions of this pan are: 7" across including 1 and 1/4" for the post in the middle and 5" across the bottom. It's about 6 and 1/2" tall.

It does seem to be too narrow for an angelfood cake.

I'm not sure it's a baking pan at all. Tube pans for baking usually have a completely open center, allowing the oven heat to circulate easily.
This pan has a small hole in a metal center. Of course hot air will still come though the hole. But I think the unusual center may tell us something about the pan's real function. Maybe something is mean to fit through that hole.

I think Plllog is on target. I found this blog and the cake looks to be from a mold like Catherine's. You can see a similar pan in one of the photos described as a pudding mold.

It's called a Bundt pan. It is used for baking Angel food cakes. It has no lid.

Maybe you wanted to make a shape for a compound birthday cake? Maybe a mountain or a fez? Cross cut to be wheels on a hot rod? Or maybe you wanted to make a small chiffon or angel cake? A tall jell-o?

I thought that maybe it was a pan for those decorated dolls. Do you think maybe you bought it to use for that? That would definitely work for that.

I read some of the text on the link from Alex's link re: that cake. She (?) does mention that that cake was baked in a "pudding mold" ... in case you're interested.

A pudding mold has a lid, however.

It is the right size for a doll cake, but those are usually belled, i.e., rounded around the "hips".

Because of its simple form, it's probably a generic tube pan that is meant to be used for Kugelhopfen, chiffon cakes, doll cakes, monkey breads, steamed puddings (with an improvised lid), or whatever other uses one can think of. :)

There was a while back....long ago and far away, when I was interested in making a steamed pudding. Someone gave me one with a lid, but before that, 'll bet I bought this one, thinking it was somehow a pudding steamer. ......but I never used it. So plllog......I think you solved the mystery of why the heck I even have this thing. :)
Maybe I'll try making kugelhopf some day....or even a steamed pudding with an improvised lid.
