Halloween and spare body parts

Yes indeed, it's Halloween. When I made the brains and eyeballs, I hadn't factored in the possibility that they were actually just zombie bait. Only we know that they are actually chocolate cake pops with some strawberry jam for blood that runs when bitten. Have a brain.....an eyeball....or maybe just a cupcake.

We also have a skeleton, complete with Styrofoam skull and some Stromboli ribs. More body parts, sheesh...

Do I hear something? Like a wolf howl or an owl call? It must just be the wind. Yeah, that's it.....

No, there's someone at the door, it's probably zombies, after the brains. Eeekkkkk, it's.......

A zombie owl!! Oh no, run for your lives!! Well, OK, she doesn't look that scary, really, but she has a sister who is a real witch:

She wouldn't keep her hat on, so we gave it a little help from Photobucket.

OK, now that knock MUST be the zombies, I'm sure it is. It is! It's a zombie......in a poodle skirt? This just is not right.

Thank goodness she brought along the police to protect us!

Oh, no, there it is, a zombie. No, it's a mummy!

Oh, all right. There aren't any zombies. We've eaten all the brains and the monster is a huge plastic cling that goes on the front window and scares the bejeebers out of all the little trick or treaters.

Have a cupcake and say "rest in peace" to another Halloween. I'll be cleaning up the rest of the body parts.

Well, at 7AM this morning the tree service fired up it's chain saw and dropped both of my boulevard trees in about 2 hours. What took decades to grow took only minutes to fell. The city street crew working with him used a big Case loader and hauled the trees off to a city burn site in 4 dump trucks. For some reason they are not chipping the trees. I think some of the larger pieces are going to the tree service guy...as part of the contract. He heats his house and workshop with (what else) wood. So, there will be no free wood chip mulch from this event. However, when they come back to grind the stumps I'll salvage that for some free wood mulch. The trees were both very rotted and when the main trunks finally hit the ground; they split in two revealing large black pockets of rot. Unfortunately, the tree service guy told me that the Linden tree they left standing of the 3 in front of my house, has rot problems too. And, it will probably only last 2 to 3 more years. (sigh) By noontime the crew had moved down the street west of me and had dropped 6 more large trees. They have 40 more on the list.

Gosh I can't believe I didn't post about receiving Theresa's box!!! I must've written it late when I was tired and then turned off the computer before I posted it -- I'm a big dummy! Therea thank you soooo much. I received a pink AND a purple rueilla. I love these, they are so easy to care for and one of the few flowering desert plants that I really really like. And a white antique climbing rose. (So thoughtful Theresa, I just love this). Also apple cinnamon potpurri (I have this in a basket by the back door so you can smell it when you go in and out). And Apple cinnamon scented facial mask (I love these homey smelling things!) and fall-themed pot holders (mine are geting so ratty - thanks!), carmel apple candy corn and very nice bath bubble beads and a thanksgiving sun catcher for my entry window. And a big Busy Persons Guide to 20 Minute Gardens book - boy does that describe me - will certainly come in handy. Thanks soooo much Theresa, have a wonderful Fall!!!

I put in the handheld for a couple of reasons, one is that the hose allows the head to be moved around and hung from other points in the shower. Example; I have a head bracket in the wall down low, my wife sometimes hangs the head on that when she's shaving her legs, etc. Or the hose allows you to easily use the head to rinse down the walls and floor of the shower. Some people use it to wash their kids or even their dogs. One thing I learned a few years ago is that handhelds are no longer the cheap leaking showerheads that I grew up with back in the 70s. Hand held heads are now the same fine quality shower heads that go on a shower arm, except they're mounted on a (ta da!) handle. The only caution I'll offer is that rain heads have a gentle flow, it's not the vigorous spray that typical shower heads provide. Some people with long hair would find rinsing shampoo from their hair to be a slow process. So don;t plan on a rain head as your "main" shower head.

Not sure I would have had the courage to bite into one of those brains! Nice job with the goodies.

The zombies, er I mean kids, are getting so big. Bud looks especially grown up to me. Cuties all. Thanks for sharing.

FOAS, the kids liked the Stromboli too, but Madi was afraid of the skull. Afraid of the monster on the window too, even after I told her they were my friends.

Thanks, John. The treats are fun, and could be anything from breadstick fingers to cookies shaped like bones. There were to be witch fingers made of cheese straws with almonds for nails, but Madi came to "help" on Halloween and I got a bit behind, LOL. It was so worth it.

cooking2day, that's Elery's guitar. Both he and Ashley play, and Ashley also plays the flute, the keyboard and she's working on the banjo. Amanda plays the saxophone. Everyone plays something except me and I can't even get the blasted iPod to work!

dedtired, Bud IS getting big, isn't he? 4'2" now, and just turned 8, he's a long way from that chubby little "Bruvver" he used to be. (sigh) And The Princess is nearly as tall as me, and already taller than my Mother.

Mitch, just when I think I'm getting good at cake, I have a spectacular failure, LOL. Keeps me realistic, at least. The brains were a success, but the eyeballs were not. It wasn't the cake it's that darned vanilla coating, I hate the stuff!

Betty, Halloween is always more fun with the kids, it lets me behave like a juvenile delinquent!

Cathy, would you be a cheerleader? I still have a few cupcakes and a brain or two. But, I suppose you put that uniform on, the Coach will never let you get away!

I've never seen anything quite like that!
I'm not sure I could bring myself to try any of the cake things,
Not being a fan of icing in general,
But I'll bet the kids loved them.

That's a whole 'nother story! ! ! !

Annie, you exhaust me just looking at what you do.

I can't believe how big the kids are getting...especially the Monkey Princess. Is it just this pic or is she really looking very much like her Mom?

I recall vividly you posting here when you first knew that Amanda was expecting....so much has changed for all of us since then.

Thanks, Diane, the kids are sure growing, aren't they? Makayla is now officially 3 inches shorter than me, and only 1/2 an inch shorter than my Mother. It's crazy, and Bud is going to be bigger than all of us, I think!

Dcarch, I don't have an age cut off for trick or treaters, I figure you're never too old for free candy. (grin)

Rusty, the brains are made with a silicone ice cube mold. I just melted some pink Wilton candy melts, smeared it up the sides of the mold, let it set, filled it up with cake, then smeared some more candy on top (bottom?) to seal it. Let it sit for a few minutes to get firm and pop it out of the silicone mold. Voila! Brains. The only problem is that the mold only makes 4, so you have to repeat the process as many times as it takes, so it gets a bit time consuming.

Sharon, Makayla looks more like her mother all the time, it's always kind of surprising to me. Yes, things have changed a lot in the last 11 years or so, haven't they? Makes me kind of soppy too.....

Heck, Ashley was only 14 then, now she's out of college, married, working, has two kids. Dad was still alive and so was the WonderWeiner. (sigh) And I was still married to the ex, so good and bad, LOL. Where has time gone?
