cheap jar lids

OK, I learned my lesson. Never buy an off brand of jar lids. I bought Mainstay brand from Walmart tonight. They are curling up as we speak. As soon as they hit the hot water they bulge unevenly. I don't know how they will be when cooled, but right now I am not happy. Tomorrow I am taking the rest back and complaining. They shouldn't be sold at all.

I just got a notice from my friendly Extension Agent telling those of us who are giving home canning classes to recommend using Ball or Kerr lids due to a rash of failed seals on the cheap jar lids.

A lot of folks are successfully using Tattler lids, but they still aren't recommended as safe to use by the National Center for Home Food Preservation (the U.S.D.A.), so use at your own risk. Perhaps with more time testing they will pass the test.....

If you have a FoodSaver with a jar sealer, you can use the cheap jar lids for vacuum-sealing jars.

Wow, that didn't happen to me. I bought some in the spring when making strawberry preserves and they worked fine. Sorry for your heartache.

Just FYI, Menards Ball lids are almost the same price.

You know Dick laughs at me when we travel...and I go "Ohhhh...a WalMart!!" Well, I can find the odd canning jar that I can't find here. I don't know about NoVA but I can also find things at the Annapolis Farm store. I bet there might be some of those lurking in VA still. And what about Wegmans? esp the one out Reston way. btw, on this note, I got some 12oz canning jars in Shoppers for $6.99 about 3 weeks ago. I happened to be in Safeway for my final 99c peaches and checked their jars. A fr*ckin" $13.99 a box!!!!!!! And...do I have to go to Canada to get those small 125ml (2oz?) Bernardin jars? Maureen

irun, sometimes I get impatient and "test" a jar for a seal and the center pops down and stays down as you described. I don't seem to have any more lid failures with those jars than with the ones that pop by themselves, but I don't advocate doing that. I should be more patient and just let the darned things do their sealing on their own time, but I've had no catastrophic failures from my impatience......yet. Annie

Well that is unfortunate but I suspected there was something off about the pints if they were all failing. I would contact the company and report the issue. It is hard to imagine that they let them get through quality control like that and I would expect the company to try to make things right. Annie- The squared half pint Anchor Hocking jars are fine. I've got some jars that have been sealed for a year and a half. I will buy them again in the future but I will be staying clear of the pints (except maybe for crafts) after reading Nila's bad luck with them. Rodney

other than the website>? I check all I have saved plus the recycle place. here in this small town I hate how manufactrs make so many different lids as I wanna save stuff like dried herbs etc in them. Y'all mention "grain lady". what happened to her anyone know? anyone find a place to order from over the phone? website of the Oui lids ....list no phone number> if nothing else I like to know how much postage runs for say like 10 pack of the 4 pack lids. anyone order them> hate using Big A....like buying stuff local if possible thanks all. Yes, I've heard of a lot of problems with the Mainstay brand of no only lids but jars, having problems this year. An unusual amount of the jars have been breaking in the canners too. .

I too bought Mainstay and they curled. Next morning they were all sealed. I was worried about them though. I canned apple sauce.
