Pumpkin pie

Ibought the pumpkin pie filling in the can. I,'m not sure how to use it.I meant to make the pie with pumpkin purÃ¯Â¿Â½e. Do you have to cook this filling? I made the graham cracker crust which is already baked.

Clairdo, there should be directions on the side of the can. Yes, it needs to be cooked and, I think, two eggs need to be added. It's not intended for a graham cracker crust but, maybe, somebody has a recipe? Try checking the Libby's website? That happened here a few years ago. I sent DH to the store for Libby's pumpkin puree and he came home with the pie filling.

Pumpkin pie filling is a custard, and can be baked without any crust at all, if you want. I'd prebake the graham cracker crust first just to make sure it doesn't get too soggy from the filling.

It should be delicious. Two of my favorite tastes. In our family, pie crust is a garnish that no one really likes, so we've tried all kinds of different strategies and combinations for "crusts".

Martha Stewart says (??!!) this for her pumpkin pie with graham cracker crust Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Press crust mixture into bottom and up sides of a 10-inch metal pie plate. Freeze 15 minutes. Bake crust until dry and golden brown, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack; let cool completely.

Pumpkin expert I'm not but I have made pies from pumpkins when I found pumpkins cheaply around here. I made the pies directly from the pumpkins and froze them. My kids loved them. I thought they were a little stringy but DH and kids didn't care. Wouldn't it be easier to find a farmers market or fruit stand around halloween and purchase your pumpkins for pies then? After halloween the pumpkin fields around here are littered with pumpkins. Probably what they sell for canning. I use a lot of pumpkin, canned, and perhaps it might be worthwhile to can your own.

No idea if interchangeable, but pretty sure about differences. Canned pumpkin is just that... pureed pumpkin and probably some kinda preservative. Pumpkin pie filling gives you a jump-start on a pie... spices, sugar, etc.

Colleen, thanks for that reminder. I have squash in the fridge that I need to use up and I'm thinking maybe a custard type dessert, minus the crust. Grandma used to bake pumpkin pie in custard cups because I never wanted the crust, so I'm thinking that might be the way to use up that leftover squash. I used to use the Libby's recipe, but I've found a 4 egg pumpkin pie from Genius Kitchen and that's become the family favorite. I've also found that squash or sweet potatoes make a reasonable substitute, and so I quit growing pumpkins and use that space for something else, like butternut squash. I can purchase the "sugar pie" pumpkins at my local farmer's market, if I decide that's what I want. Since the "great pumpkin shortage" a couple of years ago, I quit using canned pumpkin at all. I used to make Martha Stewart’s pumpkin cheesecake because my oldest son loves it. I made my own pumpkin purée from a pie pumpkin, but haven’t made it lately because it’s lots of work. I saw this recipe recently in my NYT recipes email, and thought it sounded good and a little different.
