Yeah, I subscribe but am a little disgusted with them. My Cook's Illustrated membership does not get me access to, say their Cook's Country or "Editor's Choice," or whatever they are recipes. Seriously? I feel I pay enough for what every other publication would post for free, but now they want to squeeze more money out of me.

Somewhere along the long the line I wrote them a note complaining about it but I never even bothered to read their response so I can't tell you what it said.

If you want a recipe, ask, and if it's available to me online or in one of the three cookbooks I also paid good money for, I'll be happy to post it.

If you know the name of the recipe and do a search for it through yahoo or google, you can usually find in in one of the major recipe databases (the Test Kitchen recipe, not something close).

I ended our "relationship" when they started sending me books I hadn't ordered. If there is a recipe I want I can sometimes find it posted elsewhere on-line. We get two PBS channels on our basic cable and I can sometimes view the recipe twice if I didn't get all the information to write it down, or wait until there are reruns. I'll also be happy to share any recipes, I have seven of their books.

Are you clicking on just the current season's recipes? I can still access those just fine. When I log in as a non member, it does bring up a screen asking me to sign up for a paying subscription, but I just click out of that, then click on recipes.

I also looked up a couple of their recipes last week, they did ask for my email. Like ngraham I get a screen asking me to sign up, but I close it and click on the recipes and they open up for me.

i had a subscription for years, and it was worth what I paid for it. But then they started subdividing the site, wanting more money to view each little piece. There was even premium content within some of the pieces! It seemed like no matter what I wanted to view, it was never in "my" subscription. I finally got disgusted and unsubscribed--though I haven't been successful in getting off their email list!

I'd really like to see a "family tree" of America's Test Kitchen, which seems to include several very separate operations under one roof: ATK-labeled shows and books; Cook's Illustrated-labeled shows, online access, books, and magazines; and Cook's Country-labeled shows, online access, books, and magazines. What is labeled "The Best" in one is often followed closely by a slightly different "The Best" in another branch of the organization. There seems to be no way to subscribe to a cost-saving combination of the recipes, services, or publications; I cannot possibly afford to subscribe to everything individually. As much as I (usually) like what they do, it comes across as a very off-putting racket.

I occasionally record some of their episodes on the cable box, and then if they appear to be worth saving (which is rare), I put them on a DVD. Usually, I just learn a tip or two (at most) and then use that tip the next time I make something. For most of the things they make, I prefer other recipes that I already have or else I have figured out a better way to make something than they have. Their taste preferences are very different from mine, but very occasionally they have a technique that is interesting. For example, I recently saw a show on turkey burgers, and they added gelatin and mushrooms to the mix to improve texture and moistness. I already added mushrooms to mine, but I did find that adding gelatin did help, and I make a turkey meatloaf last night adding gelatin, and it was improved. I made a Greek style meatloaf, however, based on several Greek meatball recipes, and so it was a combination of several different influences. On the same show, they made potato buns using potato water and VWG, and I already do that, but they also added mashed potatoes, and so I might try that addition. The VWG was to balance the addition of potato.

One show I did keep was when they made Sag Paneer and Naan, although I did not get the beginning of the Naan recipe. I did not need the recipe, but I did find the cooking technique interesting.

I think if you glean whatever tips and techniques you find interesting, you may find that you really do not need their recipes. I much prefer Martha Stewart's scone recipe to theirs, and hers is much easier to view on line.

I'm not that lucky. I close out of the first request and it does go to recipes. However, if I choose a recipe, it again brings up a sign up form which requires my CC no for my free trial.

I just tried the site. I had to register for a free membership in order to see any recipes. With the free membership you can see this year's recipes. To see all the recipes you must sign up for a paid Premium mbrship. When registering, be sure to Unclick all the offers for books or updates from other sites.

I always use a fake name and address when signing up for this kind of site. Someone at 123 Main St Anytown USA is getting a lot of my junk mail.

As a subscriber to one of the ATK sites, I just received the email below. It appears they are trying to simplify things -- I hope so, anyway!
