Lost recipe

So...for years I had a loose leaf copy of the Better homes and Garden cookbook that I received in mid 70's. Only recipe I ever used from it was a coffee cake recipe that made a fine crumb cake that people compared favorably to the Coffee Cake the old Drakes Company made. Well family member borrowed book and long story short, book has disappeared. Strange part is I do not know what cake was named or the edition of the book it was in. Thinking ebay and buying editions published prior to 1976. Other ideas?

Did you check Better Homes and Gardens web site? The link below has 95 recipes. Hope one is what you are looking for.

What coffee cake is it, there are a few - streusel coffee cake, any fruit coffee cake, buttermilk coffee cake, applesauce coffee cake, peanut butter coffee cake, date orange coffee cake, berry coffee cake.

Is it one of these?

I feel your pain. Suggestion: try allrecipes.com,,they have some collections like Xmas extra with all of it together. That might help and you can do an advanced search where you put in name of recipe or main ingred you want or don't want in a recipe,,that could help you track down some lost stuff. Plus I like that they are rated and people tell how the dish turned out,,what improvements they made etc. I can bring up bread pudding without raisins or if I have extra bananas on hand I pulled it up using bananas in the bread pudding and got hits there too. About.com in their food section has some wonderful recipes that I've made for years and lots of collections too. Now you got your work cut out for you in deciding....that is the hardest part you know. I hope you have a great first hosting experience,,,just remember, it's just one meal,,this won't make or break a persons life. Why don't you ask some that are coming to "bring your favorite XYZ dish" to help you out? I've done those,,"I'll do the whole thing dinners" and by the time I'm thru, I'm too tired to enjoy it,,I'm broke and say I'm not doing this again. Or, how about ordering some stuff from Honey baked ham or whatever. Take advantage of Costco, they have great appetizers you can pop in the oven. I'm just thinking out loud here. Have a good one. Could it have been as simple as browned, crumbled sausage, drain fat off, while still in frypan add a block of cream cheese and stir over low heat until melted and mixed with the sausage. Maybe a little marjoram herb sprinkled in? What about mushrooms in it? This is how I make my mushroom turnovers and my Sausage Nuggets with crescent roll dough. Does this sound like it at all?

Found this on an old post here. Is this the one you were looking for? Creamy Hamburger Soup 2 cans of Cream of Mushroom soup 3 cans of water 1 lb. of ground beef, browned 4 medium potatoes, cut into small chunks and boiled until almost done, but not mushy 1 can corn This is the basic recipe... You can add or take away to make it your own.

OK, I have my 1976 copy opened to coffee cakes. I see a Honey Crunch loaf, Kaffee Kuchen, and Cowboy Coffee cake. Can you give us an idea of some ingredients that you used in your coffee cake? Or does a name sound familiar?

I have the 1968 edition, which was still sold in the early 1970s. It contains some of the above-mentioned items and, in addition, has one recipe titled, simply, "Coffee Cake," which has a "spicy topping" containing cinnamon and nuts.

The cake ingredients in all the versions are pretty similar, except for the type of fat (shortening, butter/margarine, or salad oil). Maybe one of these will ring a bell.

I mentioned to my sibling that I was looking for the lost recipe and that another had borrowed the cookbook and it was never seen again. The response was moron that recipe isn't in the BH&G cookbook its in the Betty Crocker book. Then proceeded to take my worn beat up copy of the Crocker book open it up and show me the recipe. My weak defense was "well they are both red" I ducked the flying book. Thank you to everyone who took the time to try and find the lost recipe when apparently its just me that is losing it.

Well, I'm glad you found it! I lost a simple & very good cole slaw dressing recipe from the BH&G book that I had cut out & put on a recipe card. Friends looked at their copies, I went through the recipe card box twice, then finally bought another book at a flea market. Then I found the lost card - in the recipe card box, of course.

I'm also glad you found it. I looked for YEARs for my Grandma's (my Mother's Mother) sweet relish recipe for canning. Finally I decided to just try to recreate it and tried recipe after recipe without success.

One day I was at my Aunt LulaBelle's (my Father's sister) house and she was canning. I remarked that her sweet relish smelled like Grandma's. She said that of course it did, Grandma had given her the recipe "years ago".

So the recipe from one side of my family stayed with the other side of the family, LOL, and I'd never even thought to ask any of Dad's side of the family.
