No Peek Stew

I'm going to make the famous no peek stew for about 30 people and need to put my menu in a newsletter and post on a bulletin board. This is a fundraiser and will be $9.00 a plate.

Suggestions please for another name that will better describe it.
If I saw stew, I would be expecting a one dish meat, vegetables and gravy mixture.
I do serve it over mashed potatoes, if this matters.
And I do buy Eye of Round roast and cut into chunks instead of stew meat.

Maybe you could call it Cassoulet au Boeuf. You can find recipe for that and see if it fits.

What's in it? Cassoulet has beans so that would be overkill with mash, I think.?

Yes, Alexa, I got that impression from another post you made some time back. I do have to say though, that you are in the minority. I have only had two people detest them: (well, that I know of): you, and one of my students. Yep. We all have different tastes. I love rich, and cheesy, and detest too cloyingly sweet stuff, whereas most of the others love the sweet stuff. Actually, what I said was, if a recipe sounded too sweet to me, I would not choose to make it. I make lots of savory recipes that don't sound good just to see if they are. I am interested to hear if she likes it. Actually, I like teresa's idea of using wine instead of ginger ale. That would eliminate the sweet. As a matter of fact, I think I will try it with wine. Now that does sound good to me.

When I saw the title of your post, I thought you were looking for venison or other game stew. LOL I like the purple-topped turnips in beef stew too. They give it a little bit of a peppery flavor that can't be acheived with seasonings. I've made this Greek beef stew since my teen years and it's good for less tender cuts of meat like round that require long cooking. I usually serve it with couscous. GREEK BEEF STEW (2-3 servings) 1 lb. lean beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 Tbs. butter 2 medium onions, coarsely chopped 1/2 bay leaf 1 small stick of cinnamon, broken into 2 or 3 pieces 1/4 tsp. whole cloves 2 Tbs. dark raisins 1/4 cup dry red wine 2 Tbs. water 1/2 can (6 oz. size) tomato paste 1 Tbs. wine vinegar 2 tsp. brown sugar 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 tsp. ground cumin 1/4 tsp. dried mint, crumbled or 1 1/2 tsp. finely chopped fresh mint Season meat generously with salt & pepper. Melt butter in Dutch oven or heavy casserole. Add meat and turn to coat on all sides with butter. Arrange onions, bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves and raisins over top of meat. Mix remaining ingredients and spread over casserole contents. Do not stir. Cover very tightly and bake at 325 degrees for about 1 1/2 hours. Stir sauce gently when serving.

Call it Saute de Boeuf/porc/.....aux petits legumes (if there are any veggies in it!) avec sa puree de pommes de terre.

I'd call it beef with potatoes. Or, if you must, Braised Beef with Mashed Potatoes. At least people will kind of know what they are eating.

Ditto what Annie suggested. Do you top your No Peak stew with buttered bread crumbs? A friend introduced this recipe to me years ago and her version has the crumbs on top.

"Braised Beef Cubes Au Gratin with Mashed Potatoes?"

I've also heard it called Lazy Day Beef Stew.

I googled no peak stew and came up with several dissimilar recipes. What's in yours?

This recipe is from the Once-A -Week Cooking forum,
Your Favorite Family recipe thread.

I've been making it for years and it's always a favorite.
My grandsons love it, and in fact requested it for camping this weekend.
I cook it in my Nesco Roaster and serve it over mashed potatoes.
I use Eye of Round Roast cut into chunks, and no mushrooms except what's in the soup (grandsons don't like them).

Teresa, I don't use bread crumbs.

Here is the recipe as copied from other forum

No Peek Casserole

2 lbs stew meat ( i use 3 lbs)
1 can Campbell's Chicken Mushroom Soup
1/2 cup Gingerale
1 pkg Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1 4 oz jar mushrooms, drained (optional)

Preheat oven to 300. Comebine ALL ingredients (DO NOT brown meat and DO NOT dilute soup with water) together. Mix well. It will be lumpy before it's cooked. Pour into a casserole dish and cover.
