New kitchen toy, a long slow cook on the grill and mushrooms

My matzoh ball soup attempt has been delayed by beautiful weather. On the other hand I did my first ever long slow cook on the BGE. A 6 lbs pork shoulder blade roast at 225-250 for 10 hrs. Shredded and served with wwheat ciabbatas, cole slaw, tomato ginger chutney and white tomatoes. Delicious!!!!!

A couple of friends who came to visit from out of town to exchange perennials and meet kittens stayed to eat. My mom and her SO also joined us. One of the friends is a mushroom hunter and discovered a huge clump of edible honey mushrooms about 15 feet from my door. So everyone got a pile to take home.

And finally I just got a new (to me) kitchen tool - a vitamix! Very excited but I haven't made anything in it yet. Arrived last night when I was blanching a huge bunch of chard and mustard.

Oh yeah! A 6 lbs pork shoulder blade roast at 225-250 for 10 hrs is as good as sous vide.

Actually, it's better. That smoky, juicy, tender meat, not over cooked "Low & slow".

Need a beer to make it perfect. :-)

Sounds delish! You're gonna love the vitamix I got mine a few months ago didn't even own a blender previously and I use mine almost daily. I've also become a green smoothie addict something I never thought I would do.

Don't know if you have already made your decision, but I would actually describe the burners opposite of idrive65. Front to back to me describes the direction the burners run front to back with them left right and perhaps several in the center. That means that for indirect heat (slow cooking for ribs, brisket, whole poultry and large meats) you can use one or two burners on one end and cook on the opposite end, one on either end and cook in the center, use the center burner(s) and cook on wither side -- gives you options and full use of the front to back grill space. With side to side (not side by side) are burners going across from one side to the other where you have one front back and center. For indirect heat, your options are to use the back only or the front and back and cook in the center. You have the full width of the grill to cook, but less room front to back and the heat may be less indirect for whatever you are cooking. Webber has 3 different types of grates and different stores may carry one or two. Cast iron sears (may give a bit more char flavor) and retains heat well but rusts most easily (they suggest not cleaning after cooking so that the oils from cooking protect the grates until you preheat and burn them off when you cook the next time). Porcelain coated have protection from rusting, but some may feel they don't retain heat and sear as well as cast iron. We've used both and never had any complaint with the porcelain-- the rust factor probably makes it a better choice in our climate). Stainless is an option that comes standard on the higher end Summit grills or as an option or additional purchase for the Genesis. I've cooked on the other ones so long I wasn't sure about the stainless even though the rust proof definitely appealed in our humid climate. We were thinking about it when I realized the charcoal grills I've used all have stainless grates and the Summit ones were heavier and should do even better. So far, they've been working very well. I can cook happily with any of the grates, but the use of space -- having enough, being able to use it efficiently for large of small cooking needs and having it arranged well for what you want to cook would be what I would focus on. The burner direction matters most if you pile charcoal to one side and cook on the other. If you usually place evenly across the bottom, it may not matter to you at all. I'm sure you can find one, but if you have trouble or just want to look and have something to compare, Thermoworks does ship to Canada. They also often have a few things on sale or some giveaway. They just launched a new alarm, so that may be it for now, but I would expect that the coming month and up to our Thanksgiving will have a number of sales or specials if you are willing to take a chance on waiting. I told DH I was going to probably use this method for the dough from now on -- unless we don't plan ahead, I suppose. My greatest frustration with pizza dough in the past was not being able to predict the rise. Nothing like being really hungry and waiting for that danged dough to rise. Rrrrr Was bad enough the other day for just the two of us while we were busy watching a football game. When the boys are home? You can imagine. Double Rrrrr -- by the time the pizza was ready, they'd filled up on snacks. Having dinner time ay your control is always better, whatever the reason. I'm very happy to know I could adapt your method to my sourdough recipe. I hope to play with some bread loaves soon. In the larger oven though.

When we moved 7, 8years ago, i took the opportunity to thin out the toys. The original owner, a single mother, put in a downstairs back room baking kitchen for extra income. We use it as a project room and pantry so i still have all the toys but none of it is upstairs in the main kitchen. It has been nice to just have the basics and my favorites. No appliances like a toaster, microwave, or any counter clutter. Wanted to go back to the basics of chopping by hand, cooking fresh and rustic. No plastics, glass fridge storage pyrex, etc. Oh, sure, it all finds its way back up every once in a while but i do a 'sweep' once a month or so and back it goes. My drawers are no longer junky and stuffed. My favorite things i remember when i moved... -all fresh new spices, one set was a gift -treated myself to good cooking oils and vinegars -2 new big cutting boards,(even though i have a dozen misc ones) -restaurant quality water kettle and coffee grinder -fresh new pot holders and kitchen towels. I've always had good knives and cookware, cast iron all sizes and enameled cast iron, all sizes. No longer use non-stick anything. 2 appliances most used and loved that have easy accessed under counter storage... Breville juicer and Blendtec blender. So worth the high cost for quality. I never wanted a kitchen aid since i don't bake but found one at a yard sale last year for 15$. Finding many uses for it now that i have one. (it had a loose screw in the housing that made it run with a gruff rumble, brand new and fixed with-in minutes of bringing it home) -yard sales are still a favorite way to add something 'new' without the sticker shock. Like triciae, i always have something collected from years of traveling like a pot or bowl with something fresh from the garden or a vase with flowers from the yard. A few weeks ago it was sunflowers...last week it was a leggy purple cabbage and chives, this past weekend i treated myself to a small rosemary tree.

Also older than ... and glad to be above rather than under the ... dirt. Anyone remember 78 mm. ... no, that was r.p.m. ... records? And the needle being on a circular disk that one lifted off of the record and put up, over and back to be held in place above the arm that swung back and forth over the record but didn't move up or down? Our "Party line" phone was a big brown wooden box on the wall with a metal thing like a tulip sticking out of the front into which you talked, and a line with a black tube on the end that hung on a yoke sticking out of the side of the phone, that lifted when you took the receiver off to listen, which connected the phone to the line, by making the contacts with the large batteries inside. If you wanted to call some other person on your line, after listening to see whether the line was busy, you turned a crank on the right side to make the double bells on the front of the phone ring, in a code of short and long rings, which rang in everyone else's phone on the line, and the ones whose code it was answered ... sometimes others did, as well (almost always remaining silent while doing so). The pork was amazing! One of those meals where everyone kept going back for a little bit more....

What is your recipe for green smoothies? So far I much much prefer to eat my greens the old fashioned way. I did make some carrot juice and tomato sauce - in both cases all ingredients were completely vaporized.

This is a good beginner smoothie and the first one I started with I found it on a recipe runner.
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice)
1/4 cup plain non fat Greek yogurt
2 cups fresh baby spinach
1/2 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
1 frozen banana, broken into chunks
1/2 T. honey
1/4 t. vanilla extract
1/2 cup of ice

Then my new current favorite smoothie that my SIL introduced me to. I don't have a recipe so I just kind of wing it but its -
1/2 frozen banana
approx 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk
1/4 of an avocado
two good size handfuls of spinach
a tsp of peanut butter
cinnamon approx 1/4 tsp
and sweetener of choice honey, stevia, a date, sugar, whatever you like to use best. Adjust sweetener amount to your own taste. I usually just give a good size squeeze of the honey and its enough especially with the banana.
You can also adjust the amount of liquid if you like a thinner or thicker smoothie. Just always add the liquid first in the blender than the rest of the ingredients.

I generally like to eat my greens too but I have to say as a quick breakfast I can drink on my way to work I really enjoy them. I sometimes make them as a sweet treat at night too.

Thank you for the recipes. I will give them a try. I have quite a bit of kale left in my garden and a bumper crop of wild apples.

I am not sure if it was Vitamix or Blendtec. They have a youtube video showing how you can put all your old cell phone in the blender and make a nice cell phone smoothie.

Maybe the collection of old broken scratched eyeglasses I unearthed today. I might take apart electronics to see what is inside but I don't actually want to ingest them.
