The tomato salad is incredible. What is your cutting technique for the star sections?

Yuzu chicken - sounds delicious.

Delicata is one of my favorite squashes, too.
Usually I simply halve it & stuff,
a vegetable stuffing that is simply celery, onion, a bit of parsley
And a few (VERY few) crumbs of Pepperidge Farms Herb stuffing.
A bit of butter on top, & roast until tender.
Delicious!
Yours looks to be sliced & grilled,
I will have to try that!

And I never would have dreamed of combining
Star Fruit with tomatoes!
Leave it to you to come up with novel and interesting combinations!
Not to mention inspiring!

I'm off to pick a squash from my stash! baking some meatballs and would be good to use the oven heat for a baked pumpkin or other.

Nice cool fall day...tending yard leaves and outdoor chores... the oven on feels good!

The beet stems would be a great Halloween meal, they look kind of like tentacles reaching out to ensnare that chicken.

Can you tell I've been planning Halloween food for the kids for before trick or treating? (grin)

I'm envious of the tomatoes, mine are finally all frozen, it was a long season so for that I'm happy.

Half of my tomatoes never ripened, par for the course in Portland, the only types I can reliably grow are cherry tomatoes and a few early varieties. Heirlooms never work for me. Somehow the local farmers manage, but I can't.

Hi dcarch: I love how you present your food. I should had done so to make my kid eat more veges ... Beet greens is my favorite veges, very nutritious.

Is the center of the salad starfruit. I love it and a while back tasted an incredible salad dressing with star fruit and bing cherries.

I cook beet green stems along with the greens. I usually do a saute in a seasoned oil with red chilli, mustard, a pinch of asafoetida, curry leaves. I toss in the chopped stems a couple of minutes before the greens. Saute it all for abit so that the greens are still intense green but have shrunk and cooked a bit. Finish with a garnish of fresh grated coconut.

The larger heirlooms need a lot more days of intense heat to develop the sugars. Here in SF bay area, the eastern european heirloom tomatoes which are smaller do better. This year was good for Black Krim and for san marzanos.

John, very good eye. The cutting of the star fruits to uniform thickness is done with a special device I made, which is really meant for cutting tomatoes slices quickly and uniformly for dehydrating. It saves a lot of time if the slices are of the same thickness. I will post the device some other time.

Rusty, as you know star fruit has a very mild sweetness, so it does not overwhelm the tomato taste. The tomatoes are still the stars of the salad.

Strawberryhill, I can trim the stems out very quickly to cook them separate.

John, Portland weather should be perfect for tomatoes. You just need to start seeds indoors early.

That looks like my March-April. And why my neighbor thought i was growing cannabis.
I garden in a damp cool mountain region. Try planting deep but sideways, not deep down straight. My soil stays very cool a foot deep. I've had success trying trenching sideways. No matter how big my starts get, they stall in the cold soil. Even with raised beds and all day sun
exposure. The Greek thesolaniki and Anna Russians do well. But like you, the small grapes and pears do best.
