What's Your Favorite Christmas Movie?
Comments (20)I must say my all time favorite is It's a Wonderful Life. The story has so much meaning to me. Whenever I think at the end all the community coming to help George out with all the money to make up the difference in his Uncle's bookkeeping mistake. (Darned ol' Mr. Potter!) I can't help but always remember when I was a young teen and my Dad getting layed off from his job. He was a maintenance worker at a local hospital. He was given the boot just a few weeks before Christmas. With 4 kids and a mortgage was so much to bear before Christmas. The hard thing too is that he had already been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease (he was in his mid to late 30's). Well, he was loved by all the employees there. He was President of the Employee's Association and set up many wonderful outings to plays, comedy, etc.. So, when news got out one of his co-workers came over just about a week or two into December. He presented my Dad with a small gold papered box. Inside was $1800 CHC (cold hard cash)! He was moved to tears! All the employees pitched in money to help us out! WE were all excited and even fanned the money out on the ground and took a picture of it! So, whenever I see that movie, it brings me to tears of the goodness of people's souls coming to help a friend in need. The saying, "What goes around, comes around." always rings true with me! Love, Jules...See MoreWhat are your favorite Christmas memories?
Comments (19)Love reading all your stories! Great thread. My sis & I were 15 months apart and we usually got the same thing every year. One year we "graduated" to 20 inch J.C. Higgins bicycles from Sears cira 1958 or 59. They were identical but we realized after a couple of days that the reason we could tell them apart is because my Dad, excuse me Santa had put the handle bars on Sis's bike upside down lol. Believe it or not, she wouldn't let him change them to the correct position. She liked being backwards LOL. Mother always put a lot of thought into our stockings, the best fruit and candies. Daddy always read from the same Night Before Christmas book when he tucked us in on Christmas Eve. It had this red velvet stuff on Santa's suit on the cover. My birthday is a week before Christmas and I believe that book had been a birthday gift. When you have a birthday that time of year, you get used to birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas wrap LOL. We always were involved with the Mary & Joseph manger scenes at the church, and with the Christmas program as my Dad was the church pianist. I was always Mary, apparently because I was chubby lol. My cousins were the other actors in the play each year. Nice to look back on that period, because I don't see any of them very often now. Mostly when a relative dies, or maybe a reunion once a year. And I remember the year we got Thumbelina dolls (they moved slowly when you cranked them up), my Barbie (it had 3 wigs!), and the year I got a Polaroid Swinger camera and GoGo boots, white of course, LOL. Still have that camera, and it always made terrible pics (black & white only), but my parents went to a lot of trouble to find that one, they were sold out because it was the trend that year. The way they found my camera was because my Dad worked part time that year at the Camera and Craft store, and he was the photographer for the Santa photos. I remember waiting on him at the mall while he worked. He had a full time job, and used that camera store job to buy equipment for his home darkroom. That was a fun experience too, developing film. Now it's mostly digital, but I enjoyed doing that at home when I was a kid. Ended up in printing profession myself and got more than plenty of darkroom work later in life. I enjoyed my kids each Christmas, now I'm making new memories with the 2 small grandsons. They're such a joy! Holidays hugs to you all ~tenderlee...See MoreTeens Homecoming Dinner--Help!
Comments (5)Honestly, for this, I would order pizzas. Kids love pizza, and they can eat it standing up without utensils. Something like pasta that you need a knife and fork for would require seating for all these people and someone to clear away used plates so that the spaces can be used again. For the same reason, instead of salad, I would put out cut vegetables. Add some chips, grapes cut into small bunches, and something like cookies or brownies for dessert. Buy some big bottles of soda. Put out stacks of disposable plates (which they won't use anyway), cups, and napkins, and that's all you need. I like to cook, and big crowds don't faze me. But teens on homecoming night aren't going to appreciate any culinary efforts anyway. (Same principle as buying a supermarket cake for a small child's birthday party -- they don't eat it anyway, much less appreciate the difference -- and saving the homemade masterpiece for the family celebration.) If it were 8 or 10 kids wanting a special dinner in their fancy clothes, that would be different. But this is a big crowd, and they won't be expecting a fancy meal. My kids are grown now, but we poured more pizza, grapes, and soda down teenage throats than I care to remember, and it was always a success. Comments (28)You are all very creative. This week is spirit week and DD being a senior she is all into it. They have to decorate their cars. Due to rain that is being done tonight. Monday was senior dress up day so a fancy dress was needed. Today is 50 state day. This one they had not done before. Also this week is 10 year day where you have to dress up as what you will look like in 10 years. There is a unity day (anti bulling) where they will all wear the same colors. Then there is green and gold day where they all go crazy covering their whole bodies in green and gold. Thursday night is an informal dance and then Saturday is the big formal dance. Whew, I'm exhausted and out of money. I know you want to know what she wore today. I feel bad saying this but she ended up wearing (had to buy) a New York yankees shirt and hat. We are not even fans! She did read over all the ideas and said she is just burned out. Attempted california last night but this morning the ease of NY won out. She did come up with a clever idea for 10 year day. Sounds like most are dressing as their career choice. Healthcare people wearing lab coats, etc. Aspiring to be an occupational therapist seemed boring to dress as. DD happens to be somewhat of a track and field star and is dressing up as an olympic gold medal winner. I'll post back any unique ideas that show up. Thank you all for posting....See Morejenna1
