Vanilla Extract Makers -- those spent beans?

Some of us have been making vanilla for years now. I've been topping off and adding more beans with less than scientific accuracy or methodology, but I reached a point where my quart Mason jar is nearly half full of beans. If I am going to add more, it seems the time has come to remove some. Do you think these old beans would still be okay for sugar or salt? Should I make some salt scrubs? Let them be disposal freshener? Any other ideas?
