Tomato powder - organic?

Hi folks, I was going to bring up a previous tomato powder thread, but couldn't find it. I did buy a 17oz container of tomato powder from Emergency Essentials, kept it in the freezer, and just finished it. I have been trying to go organic since I had a cancer scare a little over a year ago, and I figure every little bit helps, but I don't think that company sells an organic version. I found one on-line, but it has guar gum, and I'd rather buy a pure product. Does anyone use/have a source for organic tomato powder? It is great stuff, I'm surprised it has never made its way into any stores.

Frontier makes a certified organic tomato powder that I've used in the past. Currently, we're growing our own organic heirloom tomatoes and dehydrating ourselves. But, Frontier is a very good product. Amazon sells it in one pound packages.

I agree with you - tomato powder is an awesome product that should be more widely available in regular grocery stores.

Thanks a lot triciae. That is actually the one I found as well. When I magnified the ingredients it lists organic tomato and guar gum. I get hives from some artificial ingredients - don't know exactly which ones except annatto color and natural flavor for sure, but was a little iffy about the guar gum?

Dave, Thanks for reply! I'm more concerned about the tomato/vinegar ratio than adding the pepper powder. So... lots more tomato powder than vinegar powder... right? Making up a care package for a good friend of mine bday on Thurs to send tomorrow. To me, the tomato powder is not as 'tomato tasty' as had thought would be. I just sprinkled it on & it might need some heat to bring out the flavor?

Organic Pesticide - Garlic Powder

There is an insect repellant you can make by whizzing one medium onion, 1 garlic bulb, and a tablespoon of hot pepper flakes with enough water to cover in your blender letting that steep for at least 24 hours and then straining that mixture and adding 1 cup of that to 1 gallon of water and spraying that around. That is an insect repellant not a pesticide, it does not kill insects. Garlic powder does not seem to work in this mixture. Some chili powders may, depending on how hot they are. Which pesticide you might think about using depends on which insect you need to control and at which stage of life they are. Some are effective in very early larval stages while others might be effective when used to control adults. However, any pesticide that will control adult insects are very broad spectrum poisons that will also kill beneficial insects.

I agree - that soil looks very dry. And are you thinking of planting them out any time soon? The second half of May is a pretty safe bet for planting out hot season crops and they will appreciate real sun much more than artificial lights. While still growing indoors you could use a dilute solution of fish fertilizer or other liquid organics. Dry organic products are not very effective in a container situation but will work fine with inground plantings. Or you can continue to use the liquids outside as well..

ugh, I just checked WebMD for guar gum. I'm very glad we are now making our own. probably not something I want to use again!

I agree that it's wonderful stuff -but how do you stop it from going solid?

-Once you open the container, especially if it's a #10 can, place it in smaller containers with airtight lids - pint and 1/2-pint canning jars work best for me. That way you aren't exposing large amounts to moisture each time you open the container to use it.

-I place moisture absorbing silica packets (from supplements I take) in the top of the container. The silica gel packets can also be purchased (check amazon.com) and you can top off each jar not in use with these packets.

-Avoid moisture. When using from the container, get in and get out as quickly as possible. Don't leave the lid off for any length of time.

-Store the in-use container in the dry confines of your refrigerator. Due to the frost-free feature on refrigerators, they maintain low humidity levels at all times. If you don't store it in a refrigerator, make sure the container has an air-tight lid and slip the container inside a zip-lock bag for another layer of moisture-proof storage.

-Store the in-use tomato powder in a container with very little air space. The more air space there is in the container, the more moisture it can harbor each time it's opened.

-If it does start to lump, you can grate the lumps on a box grater or a microplane.

No problem triciae - maybe I should order it from you! Thanks a lot olychick - 5 pounds is more than I wanted to order at one time, but since I keep it in the freezer, maybe I'll just get that one and divide it up as grainlady suggests - might last me a few years!
