Trying something new: Sauerbraten

I was chatting with a friend a week ago and for some unknown reason, I asked him (jokingly...he's a new bachelor cook) if he was having sauerbraten for dinner. Please note: I've never even seen it before...unless maybe on a cooking show.

That got me thinking...and well, I went out Saturday and got a bottle of red wine...then found when I wanted to open it Tuesday, no wine corkscrew (my parents house...forgot it wasn't at mine). So, after a quick run to local liquor store...I was in business and my roast has been marinating since.

Today I took it out and browned it and it's now cooking at quite low heat till about noon. Then I'll do the gingersnaps and such for the sauce.

I'm planning also on making (another new) spatzle to go with it. I'll get that started between 11 and 12, we won't eat till one or a bit after.

Wish me luck on the new ground I'm breaking....
