Too Much Epsom Salt
Comments (15)Yes. It's a salt, so the more there is in the soil solution, the harder it is for the plant to take up water. If there's much too much, it literally pulls water from plant cells by exactly the same mechanism curing salts pull water from meat cells (bacon, ham, etc). You should never dose with Epsom salts unless you have a very good reason to believe the only thing wrong with your plants, nutritionally, is a magnesium deficiency. In nearly 100% of all cases for plants in containers, it would be better to simply flush the soil and fertilize with an appropriate fertilizer containing magnesium and all other essential nutrients. Overdosing with Epsom salts because it has the potential to make your plants greener is very poor practice, and FAR more likely to be limiting than helpful. Hi, Linda! If you're still active of the forums. It's been a while since your name's popped up. I hope you're faring well. Al...See MoreHelp! Have I used too much peat moss?
Comments (9)I'm soooo confused. If you made even a perfunctory effort to mix the ingredients, how are you going to scoop out the peat moss? It will be impossible. And if you did, there's no reason to. Just put about 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap in a 2 gallon watering can and pour it over 3 sq. yards of the mix. Wait til the next rain. If it doesn't fully hydrate, try again. EDIT: wait, I just had a crazy idea. Did you try to do it like cake layers or something? Well, yeah, that was bad. Don't do that. A thin layer of an improvement over top of a soil is ok in some cases, but not several thick layers. I've mixed in small amounts of sphagnum with a huge cat 1 tiller, over 1/2 acre by now. There's no need to even add detergent in that case. It will be mixed so fine with the soil it will hydrate after a couple rains assisted by microbial action in the soil. Pre-wetting ANY soil additive seems extremely tedious and unnecessary to me. Yes, you can pre-wet a _finished_ soil mix, for potting, but that's a different circumstance entirely....See MoreToo much salt in my broth. What now?
Comments (25)It's possible to oversalt the cooking water when making pasta....really it is! LOL! It can happen when the lid falls off the huge kitchen salt shaker into the boiling pasta. But if you don't think ti matters whether you salt your pasta or not...try it both ways....side by side. One pot of water salted so it tastes about as salty as the ocean and the other with no salt. Cook the pasta and add the same sauce to both and taste. Unless your sauce is over salted, I think you'll agree, salted pasta water makes tastier pasta. That's why cook books and chefs on cooking shows recommend you salt the pasta water. Linda C...See MoreI may have packed beans too tight
Comments (2)I can only tell you what I would do. When I discover I have made that many errors I make a note that I wasn't paying nearly enough attention to what I was doing and have the wife give me a back-of-the-head slap. ;-) While it isn't as much of a risk with pickled things it can be a real risk with other things. Tthen I begin to wonder what else I might of messed up with them. So for peace of mind down the line I choose to redo and correct as many errors as possible even if it means a decline in quality (like mushier beans from 2x processing). Your choice. But for future reference it always pays to check the slosh level before putting them in the canner. Dave...See Moregoodfun58
