What Store Bought Sweet n Sour Sauce is best?

Hi,

I know alot of you make your own sweet n sour sauce. Let's say I want to buy some, what store bought brand is the best? Thank you.

the only thing I can think of is NOT La Choy..LOL
It's like icky...I mean it's OKAY..but it's kinda fakey tasting.

I usually go to the asian section of my grocery(we have a large one) and pick something that hasn't been restocked yet. (or faced forward) LOL
So usually the stuff I get has two labels..the country of origins label and one in English. :o)

Mr. Yoshida makes pretty good stuff, as does Kikkoman..so maybe check out those two brands.

I agree with Kikkoman being pretty good. I bought the Kraft Sweet n' Sour sauce once and it was just awful. Even the color was bad... a brown orange color instead of a pretty red one. It didn't have much flavor at all, and kind had a bitter aftertaste. The place I went only had Kikkoman and Kraft.

I haven't purchased it in a long time, so there may be different brands available now. I was into making myself for a while (the ingredients that made it up really surprised me!), but now I just don't eat it or anything it would go on because it's too caloric.

What I stated as to needed ingredients and added acid would be quite safe. Pineapple and added vinegar will offer sufficient acidity to BWB can, no matter what was stated above. I would use mostly dried sweet peppers and NO carrots, so that whatever is added is either naturally high in acid or soaks up the acid in the liquid. Clear Jel is the ONLY thicker recommended for home caning and it remains stable after canning and holds up very well to any and all high acid foods. Ketchup, and tomato paste are also hgh in acid. The only ingredients lower in acid are the peppers and onions, and if you use dried, there will be absolutely no safety issues of any kind. The BBB may list list one, but because COMMON SENSE is used here, and all of the product will get acid added, it will can very safely. I may decide to make some too, and add the unusual taste of leechee nuts which have the texture of pears, but have a taste like no other. A local Chinese resturant makes a sweet and sour sauce with sweet mixed pickles and even red cherries. Its served over batter fried fish or chicken. The txture is like it was made with corn syrup and is very sticky, compared to store bought. I use crushed pineapple in mine too. Carrots are better if stir fried with a few other veggies, even fresh sweet peppers and onions stir fried. You should not be afraid of the recipe if its modified like I stated as its never going to get you sick or go bad with all the acid it contains, from pineapple and also cider vinegar. To get it even more sour you can also add bottled lemon juice and/or citric acid. Without 'invention' where would we be today? Keep in mind that your not reinventing the wheel or making a dangerous concoction of poison.

Just happened to come across this post. I'd say 95% of my peppers were grown from store bought fruits. They have been productive and haven't given me much problems except for when I brought them outside from indoor growing. One of my sweet bell peppers is fully loaded, it has 6 or 7 giant fruit on it and 1 of them is starting to turn colour now. Here is a picture of my scotch bonnet also grown from store bought fruit.... Unfortunately I didn't put it in a good location because it's surrounded by green beans and a couple corn plants and fava beans.... The good news is the fava beans are almost ready so they'll be gone within a week, two max.

Generally speaking in a home made hotsauce, salt is irrelevanet although in the quantities that Tobasco uses, it also is a preservative. If you don't want to add vinegar at all to your hot sauce, you probably need to ferment using lactic acid fermentation (whole long other discussion, not going into here..:)). This also provides you with the required low acidity to store outside the refrigerator. If you don't mind storing in the fridge and possible having to throw some away if it goes bad you can pretty much do whatever you want and don't have to add any preservative agents We make hot sauce that is vinegar based. We put the chile pods whole or sliced into jars filled with 5% vinegar(kind you buy at store) and store the jars for atleast 6 months. This allows the vinegar to mellow and the chile flavor to infuse. Then drain the vinegar off (but save it), put the softened peppers in the blender/cuisinart and blend until smooth. Add the vinegar back to the mix until you get a consistancy that you like. Add any other flavorings you want (i.e. garlic, cilantro, tomato, onion etc) and mix. Depending on what you add and how acidic it is you can store outside of the fridge or inside the fridge. kendra

I was just comparing recipes, and came across one or two with cherries, and thought I'd ask the KT. Here' the recipe I am using NO CHERRIES 1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks 1/3 cup water 3 tablespoons vinegar 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 batch of 30 meatballs (frozen or thawed) 1 large green pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces Hot cooked rice Directions Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Set pineapple aside. Add water to juice if needed to measure 1 cup; pour into a large skillet. Add 1/3 cup water, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar and cornstarch; stir until smooth. Cook over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. Add the pineapple, meatballs and green pepper. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until heated through. Serve with rice. Yield: 6 servings.

As simple as it is to make why not make your own? You will know what went into it and it will be far better than any you can buy. Plus the ingredients will not sound like a chemistry experiment gone bad.

Oh Paddy, I almost repsonded with something similar, but changed my mind at the last minute, fearing it wasn't what the poster was asking for. The poster specifically addressed that some people make their own, but that (s)he wanted to buy some. I understand that.

I've made my own sweet and soure sauce AND ranch dressing at times. However, when I'm working a lot I don't even have time to do that... plus without preservatives, the homemade stuff doesn't last very long and I know I usually end up throwing the great majority of it away.

Lately, when Kikkoman isn't available (I guess it's popular, as the space on the grocer's shelf is always bare), I've tried House of Tsang. It costs a little more, but I think the taste and texture are similar. I sometimes drizzle it on chicken breasts or thighs before baking.

You might also check Whole Foods to see if they make one under their 365 label. I'm usually quite satisfied with their products. I especially like their cocktail sauce and their Hoisin sauce isn't bad either.

vacuumfreak - based on your description, could it be that Kraft's was a duck sauce, which is in fact a sweet and sour sauce.
