Recap Of Latest Culinary Adventures

Hi everyone,

So, here's a recap of my culiinary adventures from the past month to the present.

I am still making goodies for the theatre, and we have our next cast party on Sunday! I'm debating on what to make since money's tight right now, but I'll find something to make for sure. The show is called Laughing Stock, a comedy, and I got to watch the Thursday night dress rehearsal (first one ever) and I am really looking forward to it. It's extremely funny! I'm hoping to make some Tortilla Pinwheels, but time will tell.

Back in June, I cooked an entire meal with some help from my friends, mostly myself though. I made Salmon Cakes, Broccoli and Cheese, Crab Stuffed Potatoes, and Lemonade. It was hot (their apartment had no air conditioning until just a week or so after my friend and I had visited-it's his cousin, her husband, and their daughter, who's 2, and they're due with their second daughter any day now). It was a big hit, but we didn't add enough crackers to the salmon cakes like mum did.

For my Picnic Bunch friends, we just had an outing to the local county fair last Monday (it's over now). Three of our friends couldn't make it, so it was just my one friend (whose home is where we always meet at), her husband, and her brother. It was a good time getting to eat some fair food (just a burger and fries for me-it's a weakness) and look at the exhibits. In June, we got together (again, not the whole usual crew), and had tacos/Mexican foods (salsa, guacamole, and rice).

I tried to make deviled eggs (keyword: tried) when my parents and i visited my gram (whose lemonade you all like) and uncle on Saturday. I didn't let the eggs boil long enough (plus they have our old stove which my parents had even before I was born). So, my uncle just fried a few of them up for himself. I felt terrible about it, (an extreme sense of failure), especially since I boiled eggs on that stove before. Gram called me the next day and said that she told me not to feel bad about it since it is an old stove and that I used a different pan than last time.

Don't feel bad about the egg disaster. I've been cooking with gas stoves for a long long time. But now I have fancy shmancy (must buy all new cookware) induction. Well, after many pleas for help on the kitchen forum, the deal is to steam the eggs 6 min, take them out plunge in ice water for soft, and 10 minutes for hard.

Gas was just so simple.........

AAH, memories of college and food!?! Back in 1492, when I was in college, no such thing as MINI anything (like fridge or microwave) when it came to appliances. There were a few totally TABOO things that about everybody had but HID for fear of confiscation... hot plates and "stingers" (metal coil on a cord for boiling water). Dorm did have a kitchen in basement. Fridge and stove (along with minimal tools) were almost always cruddy. And if you left anything in fridge, chances are it would disappear! No such thing as food "plans" back then. You either ate breakfast, lunch & dinner at ASSIGNED times or that $ was gone. We'd have to SNEAK stuff out of cafeteria. We always had enough packets of condiments & S&P around. Had to use powdered coffee "creamer" unless it was winter... dorm window sills in the Poconos at least kept milk chilled!?! Jr & Sr years were off-campus. It was then that I realized I had a LOT of very ill-prepared friends?? Out of 16 girls in a big old house with up/downstairs kitchens, I was maybe 1 of 2 people who actually had basic kitchen chops? One set of room mates LITERALLY ate plain spaghetti with Ragu sauce EVERY dinner for a whole semester! They became convinced others were "stealing" their milk from a gallon jug... OK, I'm sure I wasn't the only one to sneak a SMALL splash for my INSTANT coffee!?! They started putting a mark on the jug! Once, when jug was pretty much full, I added just enough water to RAISE the level ever so slightly... was last time jug got marked!?! If I could go back in time, would do some major yard sale & thrift store shopping. With mini fridge and microwave as a given, would want a smallish crock-pot, coffee maker or electric kettle, electric skillet, toaster and whatever else I could fit... or HIDE if necessary!?!

Much obliged for the helpful hints to you all. I may need to go back up to Julian to get more apples. The last box - 3/4 full cost me $30. So I'm hopeful that my own little apple "orchard" will start producing soon. Some of the apple picking places are almost as expensive as "DisneyLand." Anyway, I am now on my latest batch of Skeeters Pee. This is almost 2-3 weeks down the line from first prep, and only yesterday did it start to perk. It has been extremely cold for Oct., and was slow to get a heat source to it. I now have a grow lamp near the bucket, and wrapped a flour sack or 2 around the entire scene. When I checked it late yesterday, it looked "bubbly" - so I hurriedly put on the cover and air-lock. Since then it has bubbled - like put, put, put, put, etc., and this early morn - it is put,put, put -- put, put, put, etc. In summary then, I have either a re-start ferment - or - it is about to go to lime juice heaven - i.e. down the drain. So much fun. By the way, my last Skeeter's Pee was a bit bitter near the end. Why was that - could be too much added flavors - tartar or ? How about remaining seeds in the mash - would they affect taste? So many questions, so little time. Bejay

I am in the midst of The Curse of the House of Foskett by M.R.C. Kasaskian, but I am not sure exactly why. It is the second of a series of mystery novels with a Sherlock Holmes-like detective (only distinctly nastier). In place of Watson is his female ward, tenderhearted but bright. I found the first book clever but unpleasant, and started this one to see if it would be better. So far it is not. The hook that keeps stringing me along is the ward's tragic love affair from days past, recounted in her diary but concealed from the outside world. As far as I can see, it is the only redeeming grace.

"I have tried so hard to like Dickens but I just can't." I totally understand that, and feel a bit guilty about it, but life is too short, especially when you are a geezer, to force yourself to read something just because you "should". Just finished The Swans of Fifth Avenue, by Melanie Benjamin, a novel with many accurate details about Truman Capote and his collection of beautiful, fashionable, very wealthy women in Manhattan. I would only recommend this to someone interested in Truman and familiar with a few of the women - e.g. Babe Paley - because otherwise it is just a look at obscene wealth, endless gossip, and Truman's neuroses. Actually, it is a cautionary tale and a tragedy. Pretty good writing, though. Now, based on recommendations here, I've begun reading Memoirs of a Geisha, and it is very promising. Beautifully written, and am hoping that this little girl eventually finds her own true self.

desertdance, Thank you. Good luck with your new cookware!

dcarch, Thank you for the link, and those recipes sound delicious :). I have decided to make some Crab Dip for the party. It's chili sauce, cream chese, mayo, chopped onion, prepared horseradish (I use the mayo style for deviled eggs,so I'll use it for this, too), and the crabmeat.

Brad, your crab dip sounds delicious. It doesn't take a lot of crab to put a nice flavor into dip, remember crab can be expensive. I do like the touch of horseradish with crab.

I am not the worlds best deviled egg maker. My SIL was having a reception at her house a few years ago and I asked how I could help her, and she said deviled eggs. Don't know where that request came from, they are not my specialty.

It sounds like you've been busy, and it's nice to hear what you've been doing.

Thank you, morz8! I have an extra can of crab I bought a couple months ago to make the crab stuffed potatoes at my friend's home, so now I have a good use for it :).

Funny thing, I make deviled eggs every so often for the theatre, and they turn out really well here at home. Guess it was the stove and pan I used at my gram's that led to the fiasco.

Last time I made deviled eggs here at home, I made 1 dozen (or 2 dozen halves) and sprinkled half with paprika and the other half with some fresh chives from my garden. It looked very pretty (and tasted good, too!)

Brad, I love devilled eggs, I need to make some myself.

I usually just put the eggs in a pan, cover with water, bring to a boil, put a lid on and turn the heat off, let them sit 10 minutes and they're done. Run cold water over the eggs until they are cool enough to handle and I'm done!

The crab dip sounds good too.
