Food bucket list

Before I die, I *must* ...

Sample a real, New York, bagel! I've never had a fresh bagel. Doubt one will present itself in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho any time soon. LOL

I would also like to try a slice of Chicago Deep Dish pizza!

French croissants (doubt they are anything close to my splurge of Costco croissants)

I went to Chicago and didn't even try a pizza there. I think I am pretty happy having tried so many things. I'm fairly adventurous. Snails, caviar, liver, rabbit, jicama, lychee... all kinds of stuff. I just cannot find a blue cheese I like. I can't even hide it in something. Tastes like mold. I want to find one a I like, but no such luck so far. I might say an antipasto platter while in Italy. I assume that'll be my last shot at olives. If they aint good that way, aint no way they're good. Other than that, I have no wants.

LOL, Rob, I also can't find a blue cheese that doesn't just taste like mold to me, and I've tried several. I keep trying olives, but I still don't like those either, LOL.

I've had Chicago Deep Dish in Chicago, but I'm not a fan of pizza, so that went by the wayside. I do want to get to Hot Doug's, although I've also had Chicago Dogs in Chicago.

Carol/Dishesdone says I have to have a New York bagel to have had a real bagel, and gelato that's not from the supermarket. I'd like to try a fresh guanabana since Ashley said it was the best fruit ever while she was in Costa Rico, but other than that, I've tried a lot of things and can't imagine what I'm missing out on.

I'm sure there's something though!

I had a list when I was 14, and at the top was to marry a Danish girl and move to Denmark. My father found the list and tried to convince me not to marry a foreigner. I guess he might be a bit xenophobic, but that wouldn't have stopped me. Eventually I decided that I could never survive the winters in Denmark. I chose Denmark because I thought the Scandinavian countries were the most civilized at the time, and I liked their governmental policies. I think the next thing on my list is to visit the Costa Rican rain forest. I was hoping to do that either this year or next. I have several unfinished writings I want to complete, and the one I am currently working on is a comic book version of Maria Morevna and the Evil Sorcerer. It's been translated before, but I translated it from German and Russian versions which are more detailed than currently available English versions. Some of those were translated from French, and the French and English versions leave out the gory details of the German and Russian versions. Kevin is supposed to do the artwork for the book, and I am currently doing the storyboard for the comic book version. If we get it finished, we could propose that it be made into a movie. I expect the comic book to be about 50 pages, and so it's going to take a while. Lars

I live the Virgin diet every day. It should be called the Virgin Lifestyle. This is a good diet for people with intolerances and who have a very difficult time losing weight, but it's great for everyone I think because it makes complete sense and is super natural. It's a ten-week plan to lose weight and discover intolerances. Take out 7 foods for three weeks then reintroduce them one at a time for the next seven weeks. Below I've explained the reasons for taking out these 7 foods. Gluten: contains lectins that bind to insulin, which creates insulin resistance and can make your blood sugars rise, making it hard to lose weight. Gluten is also an inflammatory. Soy: a phyto-estrogen, a plant source of the hormone estrogen. It's also heavily genetically modified. Dairy: like gluten, acts as an isulin resistant. It's nearly impossible to find hormone-free milk. So, hormones and rising blood sugar=acne and fat. There are studies out there that show countries with the highest dairy consumption have the highest levels of osteoporosis. On the contrary, countries that rely on calcium rich foods have a much lower rate of osteoporosis. I've read that the pasturization process of milk breaks down the protein that allows our bodies to absorb the calcium. I believe all this but there is still a huge debate about it. Corn: inflammatory and a high-glycemic food Peanuts: inflammatory and high in lectins. Eggs: inflammatory. If you have sensitivity to corn and soy, eggs might affect you because the chickens are probably fed corn and soy. I have a huge intolerance to fat so another reason eggs bother me. Sugar: we all know that's bad! And don't be fooled by agave necter...higher in fructose than high fructose corn syrup. I'm 5'8 and was 148 lbs. I'm now 135 and holding. In two weeks, my injured knee from subluxation over a year before wasn't hurting and felt stronger. My ankles reduced by 1/2 inch, something I thought was genetic but I guess was just excess fluid. I never really had bad acne, but what I did have cleared up and my blackheads reduced significantly. Also, my menstrual cycle went from seven days to three. My head felt clearer and I had more energy. I rarely have wind or bloated belly as well. The cellulite on my legs reduced by about 50%. I made a point to not exercise the first three weeks to see how effective just changing my diet was. ALL these changes happened without exercise, though of course after the three weeks I went back to yoga. I don't think everyone needs to cut out all of these foods. I also know some people won't have as many changes as I did. But I don't see how it will hurt to try, just to see what changes might happen to you! I think JJ knows what she's talking about. In regards to sticking to it, I cheat every once in a while but I usually feel so bad when I do that I find myself cheating a lot less. Good luck!

I don't have a bucket list, but we've started a "pail list". This is a list of places, restaurants,and activities that we'd like to visit in our area (i.e. within a 2 hour drive). In fact we keep it in our car. Then if we have some free time or are tired of our regular restaurants, we just look at our list and try something new. We've been doing it for a little over a year now, and have really enjoyed it. We add to it whenever we hear about some place that's in the news or a friend recommends.

I forgot the most important thing on my bucket list - to have my own swimming pool. I thought about putting one in my back yard in Los Angeles, but the yard would not be big enough without destroying the pergola, and I like the pergola too much. Therefore, we will be shopping in Palm Springs/Cathedral City for a second house, and it has to have a large pool or else be cheap enough for us to afford to add one. We have an agent there already and plan to look in earnest in December or January - whenever we sell our remaining property in Texas to our nephew. We're giving him extra time, but we've told him that it really needs to happen by December of this year. I think it is great that so many people here travel so much, as it is very helpful to be exposed to other cultures. When I lived in San Francisco in my 20s and early 30s, I went to Vancouver just about every August and spent two months each winter traveling all over Mexico plus Guatemala and Belize. I had very good friends in Mexico City and Vancouver and they always seemed to love having me visit. I haven't seen that much of the U.S. - just the West Coast, SW, Louisiana, Arkansas, and NYC. I don't count airports where I change planes, such as Denver, Minneapolis, Miami, etc.

My food bucket list is short - just one more Montreal bagel before I die.

I lived in NYC for a couple of years when I was younger and was spoiled by the great bagels available there. Then I spent a month in Montreal on business and the NY bagels seemed to pale in comparison.

So if you have a NY bagel on your bucket list, just go straight to Montreal for the best bagels in the world.

Italian gelato - everyday....sometimes twice a day....while in Italy. Also, gnocchi and pasta with truffles while I am there. And chingale - wild boar.

Cioppino while in California. Alaskan King Crab in Oregon.

Raclette in Switzerland.

Mussels and frites in Belgium.

And dinner with Jacques Pepin - anything he wants to cook for me!

Ahhh bagels. Not going to choose which city's are the best. I spent my early early childhood in NYC - in fact across the street from a bialy bakery. It was a must stop on any trip we made from Maine to NY/NJ in later years. And I spent a few years in Montreal. For some reason my room-mate and I thought it was amusing to go to the bagel bakery very late at night - ride the bus back home with a large bag of hot bagels and a conversation about some controversial subject. Sometimes we could get our fellow passengers involved in bagels and debate. Seems silly now but we had fun.

Cherimoya, Dragon fruit, bread nuts, black or white truffles. Nut cheese is all the rage in the vegan community right now and I'd love to give that a try. Still haven't tried garlic scapes or hosta shoots either.

I will limit what I want to try to food and not Food and Travel! Obviously, having something in it's locale would be the very best thing.

ynnej, definitely try dragonfruit if you get a chance, it's delicious, although not widely available here. I buy it when I get into a big city like Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor.

BB, if you go to wine tastings at wineries, it seems like every one here has ice wine. The one at Black Star Farms was wonderful, but it's $95 a bottle. I tasted it, though, for $2.50!
