When do you eat them?
Comments (3)To each his own! It is a matter of preference and fig variety. My Celeste figs are sweet as soon as they first turn brown, but my Magnolia figs are bland and tasteless until full ripe. Even the Celeste figs are much sweeter when they are dead ripe, but they are sweet and edible much sooner than the Magnolia. If your fig friend is happy with her unripe figs, let her eat them early. I would prefer to wait. There is always a trade-off. If I wait until my Magnolia figs are ripe, the birds always get them before the next day, so I tend to pick them at an unripe stage and let them ripen "on the shelf" for a day or so. Not as good, but at least I get them instead of the birds!...See More1 basin sink owners--how do you scrape dishes while washing them?
Comments (18)For us, I LOVE my big, single Rohl farmhouse sink--we scrape almost everything into the disposal, and then it goes right into the DW. I cook for 10-12 people two to three times a week, so I'm used to LOTS of dishes/pans. On a big cooking night, I know it's going to be a two-load night. First load (right after scraping) is all the silverware/plates/glasses and anything small. Second load before bed is the big pots/pans/etc. Cookie sheets (which are usually almost spotless--thank you, Parchment Paper inventor!!), I just wash by hand...AND they fit in my sink without spray going all over. I guess if you're one of those people who has to have ALL the dishes done and out of the way PRONTO, this system may not work for you. Oh, and we do use a black drainboard & rack that was only supposed to occasionally be out, but now is ALWAYS out just to the left of the big sink. So anything that has to get handwashed dries in there. My mom is MORTIFIED that we have that out--she hates our single sink for that reason and just got herself a big, deep double sink. And she's thrilled. So don't hate yourself if you really do want a double sink--there are positives and negatives to both! Good luck!! -sarah from Albany, NY...See MoreGot figs?? I do, yea! How do you eat them?
Comments (12)This is a canape recipe I think would be wonderful! Prosciutto and Caramelized Fig Tidbits Recipe ingredients -2 Tbsp. (30 mL) butter* -3 fresh figs, cut into 8 wedges each -Small amount of sugar -3 Tbsp. (45 mL) extra virgin olive oil** -1 Tbsp. (15 mL) Modena balsamic vinegar* -8 slices prosciutto*, cut lengthwise into 3 strips -Watercress as needed -Salt and pepper to taste Preparation In a skillet, melt butter over low heat. Add figs and sprinkle with sugar. Cook about 1 minute per side to caramelize. Remove from heat. Whisk olive oil and balsamic vinegar together, season and set aside. Lay a piece of fig and some watercress on a strip of prosciutto and roll up. Repeat. Sprinkle a few drops of dressing on each tidbit and serve immediately....See MoreDo you wash new sheets/towels before using them?
Comments (32)Definitely. I remember bring my oldest child to her freshman dorm. We had time between meetings (parents were oriented too), and so we made up the bed while her roommate did the same. Oh my goodness, the tiny room smelled awful from the sheets straight out of their packages. So off they went to do their first load of laundry! Towels are more absorbent once they are washed, and do not use fabric softener with them....See MoreLars
