Totally Lost-- 1980's update
Comments (10)I'm a bit late to the party here and not a lighting guru at all, but I wonder if you have any ability to put some skylights in this room? If it were through the lowered part of the ceiling I guess it would have to be one of the solar light tube type - they perform quite extraordinarily. With respect to the light box, I can see how much of an issue shadows will be, and for that reason I'd actually be curious to see how the original installation performed. And to use the problem as part of your solution, if you had not already embarked on a course I would consider lighting aimed at the sides of the recess to reflect at a better angle to your cabinets and work areas. If you can't get the light radiating to where you need it, then bouncing it might be a useful concept to work with next, if you find your solution unsatisfactory. Karin L...See MoreHelp! Comments (9)Yes, it's a ranch, but I get you want farmhouse style. Personally, I love that teal. If you aren't replacing siding, I would consider a combo of cedar tones and white trim. You could also trim the windows black, which is on trend now. I know the stylish chose would be to remove that deck, as it does cut the house up, but if it is useful, could you trim differently to make it work with house more? Not sure how far down the rabblt hole you want to go on an investment property. Thinking the cheaper fix is black or deep gray paint (complimentary to roof) and do windows to match, OR strip deck rails to natural and stain cedar. The teal, cedar, and black combo is a good one. You could do the entry cedar to match stairs with black door. If you are thinking of ditching the deck it wouldn't hurt to play with paint. Pics below... The big porch on the white house below takes the ranch to farmhouse. White with black windows is the expected farmhouse look, but I see it overdone in my coastal town. It was something new in 2018, but predict it will be dated in 10 years. Personally, I like a modern exterior, with the decking in scale to your house, or go classic. Hard to beat a true farmhouse look of white with green or red trim and a metal roof. . Red house is a cool look for a ranch if you are redoing total exterior. Would work with teal....See MoreI need ideas on updating my 1980s colonial
Comments (11)regarding the front, I'd pull out those round shrubs near the garage and the home since they do nothing visually for the home. You could change the garage doors to something more up to date, along w/the front door and removing the shutters. I'd do black windows. Let me show you a slew of pictures that give you ideas of colors and styles. (and don't be too quick to shoot down painting the brick. Romabio is a wonderful product w/almost no upkeep) not quite the same as yours, but I like the garage doors, the vertical siding, black windows and the addition of wood siding (you could do composite) if you painted the brick white it could look like this photoshopped these doors so you can see. Landscaping and a new driveway will have a huge impact on the overall look I love the after shot on this one. very modern looking. if you did your driveway and landscaping like this, along w/the black windows, black accents, dark garage door, a new front door and the added wood accents, it would look so much better here's another split that got a makeover. same color roof like you have. Consider doing some type of path down the middle of the grass. Notice all of the little details on this after photo. I love this one too. they got rid of the shutters, got black windows, new porch overhang w/the wood, wood posts, gray siding, modern doors/lights/address, and of course the landscaping similar splits w/a more modern redo. similar house like yours w/the brick. gray siding, updated landscaping. although the brick is painted in this one, you don't have to do it. (I like it better but it's up to you) Medium gray siding, black windows, new front door, wood garage door and upgraded lights. and landscaping. around back, the dark siding and black windows would loo like this. do a composite wood deck, or add some type of wood to warm up the darker, black tones very similar style hosue to yours, switched over to farmhouse style. they did paint the brick w/Romabio on this one do you like the green? this color siding w/your red brick would work. I'd still get a new door and landscaping and do the walkway down the middle. if you want a porch overhang, this one is nice. I wouldn't use the shutters...See MoreWant to update our tired 1980's vinyl-sided colonial. Ideas?
Comments (1)What you want to do is overkill and a mix of styles. Keep to one simple facade entry detail. Choose the metal roof porch and take it all the way across, or do the gable up top to enhance the entry. Houzz is acting up or I'd show you more ideas....See Moredspen
