Berry Season

Yes, it's that time at the local u-pick. Red raspberries are my mother's favorite berry of all time and I like them pretty well too. When the owner of the farm told me I could pick all I wanted for $1.50 a pint, I got in the Jeep, drove the 15 miles and picked up my boxes.

It was about 11 am and already nearly 90F, hot and sunny. There was me and one other woman in the patch and the canes were loaded with berries. Of course the best ones were in the middle of the row and I wore a sleeveless shirt, LOL.

Still, I picked 10 pints in about an hour, eating an occasional berry to "test for sweetness". They were so good I went back a couple of days later and picked 10 more pints.

These went into the freezer, I'll make some jam later in the fall, when it's not so hot. Aren't they lovely?

As a double bonus, I managed to make it to the farm just as the sour cherries were ripening. If I do not pick the day they turn red, the birds get them all. I did manage to get a nice bucket full.

Just on time too, the next day every cherry was gone.
