If it's not too late to chime in, there were a few melon plants I grew in large pots (cleaned out kitty litter containers) with what I call good success. That would include foo gwa (or bitter melon), mao gwa (fuzzy gourd), delica squash -- is that considered an Asian vege? -- tong gwa as well as tomatoes and hot peppers. I like a good challenge and a lot of diligence on my part with the watering and feeding especially on hot days. I'll never know what I can and can't grow unless I just jump in and do it. I have 2 'Casper' pumpkins growing that I can collect seed from. I don't know how pumpkin genetics works, but I don't grew this variety this year (two vines) so I'm guess you'll probably get white pumpkin for the seeds. Would you be interested? Do you have Marina Di Chioggia or are you looking for it?

Anna, squash summer and winter I plant about the same time like beans, also be ready to protect them from the cold if needed. Winter squash takes up a lot of room, unless is a compact variety. I think you said that you had table queen acorn winter squash? it is a productive and good flavor variety as long as it is used in a short time, they don't store for a long time like other winter squash do, that is what happen to the ones I grew and took them out of the storage, they were not that good. The kabocha type of squash are compact varieties and they have a drier type of fruit, they are good to used them as veggies but not in sweet dishes. One that it was all purpose good and still good in storage is the red kuri that I thought it was yellow, then mature to a shade of orange-red. Seminole is good flavor and storage but it takes up a lot of room. The oriental squash varieties are also all purpose, store well but they also use a lot of space. And of course, I have not even scratched the surface in winter squash, but this are the ones that I grew in past seasons in Florida. This coming season I will be sowing some of the same and other new. I found out that they produced well in a potato bag, put 2 seeds in it and let them run where there is only mulch. Christine, I agree with you that the shipping costs make them expensive, that is why is a good idea to share the bag with other people. In my opinion no single product is better than other, it all depends on the condition of the particular garden and I also think that not one single solution is 100% foolproof, only fresh soil is. If you combine a few things it also works. I did cover crops in Arizona and I planted right on top tomatoes and it worked for me, it was more to use a thick mulch for heat reduction, again different solutions for different gardens. Here with the nematodes it works the starvation diet, do not feed them! from time to time it is a good idea to treat the soil and let it rest. Doug, the crab meals are a good source of nitrogen, my neighbor in NY liked to fish and used to bury the fish heads deep in the soil to plant tomatoes. However when using anything like that, you have to be careful not to attract other unwanted creatures, nothing can smell. Here I will be even concern on the neighbors.:) Silvia
