I keep all of my onions in a fridge drawer with my other roots (garlic, carrots, potatoes etc.) and bottles of ale. Where I live, they go moldy if they're kept out for more than a few days. Skins on--untouched, actually. Sometimes loose, others in thin plastic produce bags to help me keep track of the older vs. newer ones. It's important that if they're in plastic, that the bags be very dry. It actually helps them to stay nice if they're on a bumpy surface, so moisture doesn't accumulate in one spot. Also, it helps not to pile things on top of them (other than more onions). My drawer is very cold and doesn't get opened much. This probably helps too. Nowadays, if I don't use them soon they might sprout, but they don't go moldy on me.

I keep mine in a hanging three-tiered wire basket that my mother gave me many years ago. I go through them so fast that they do not have time to go bad. I keep garlic in the top tier and potatoes in the bottom tier. For some reason, I thought that none of these items were supposed to be refrigerated. I hang aprons in front of the baskets, so that they are not exposed to light.

My onions have always been in the crisper drawer. I buy 5 lb bags and when they're cheap, 10-lb bags.
They keep a long time. I put the net bag inside a brown paper bag. They keep a long time, before sprouting.

I've never put potatoes in the frig, they're in a hall closet.

I have exactly the same basket, Lars (where my onions live too :-) ). I think my Mom may have given me mine as well :-)

I keep onions in a plastic vented storage box on the shelf in the dark, dry pantry. Usually they don't go bad on me. Now potatoes are another thing entirely. If I buy a 5# bag of regular Yukon Gold or russet potatoes from my local grocery store, I can count on a few going bad on me before I use up the bag. Organic potatoes from the co-op or WF don't usually suffer this fate.

As for the potatoes.. I read somewhere that the starch in potatoes turns to sugar in the refr.... taste 'sweet' when used... so I don't. So in hot summer I don't buy many 'taters to keep as I don't have a cool place to keep them but in winter I keep 10 lb. bags on the floor in an empty room where the window is kept cracked a bit ... like a walk-in 'cooler'! I shall try the 3-tier wire basket idea as I have several of those hanging baskets for plants, My attempts in the refr. have them spoil earlier -though I haven't tried them with the skins still on ... WILL try that though also! My sprouted, old potatoes I bury in the garden for mulch .... & find in the Fall I have a nice crop of
'new' potatoes to dig up!

I keep them in a drawer in my kitchen along with the potatoes. If they are in a plastic bag, I'll either take them out or open the bag and fold the sides down to make sort of a bowl (especially when I want to keep newer ones separate from an older batch or to keep small new potatoes from spreading out too much).

We live in a relatively dry climate with sometimes hot summer days but usually cool nights so the house doesn't get that hot inside.
