Busy Kitchen Day (With Upcoming Pictures)

Hi everyone,

Today is a busy day in the kitchen, but they are extremely easy recipes so it's gonna be fun :-). Today, mom and I are making the Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Peach Cobbler and we're also having my favorite dish: fried green tomatoes (with Vidalia Onion Dressing) for supper! Pictures to come!

Linda C, I am so excited! The cake/cobbler's in the oven and the tomatoes have been sliced (you can let them set for 6 hours to draw the water out) and the dressing is made and chilling.

Thank you, Wildflower and Karyn, I went out last evening and brought the blooms in, and I do in fact have a CG AND a JY. Then I watched the weather forecast for last night. We had our first freeze. So, I brought my new buckets in the kitchen, got my loppers and rose pruners out, and started bringing in brug trunks and limbs. Now my kitchen counters look like several of your greenhouses. Glad that I figured out last week what "above the Y" meant, and now I have above the Y cuttings, as well as 4 foot sections of the trunks in a new white garbage can. I left some trunks and blooming parts on the plants in case the 31 degrees temp does not put the plants into dormancy. Now I feel more a part of the brug experience, a process that only started this past spring. This is such fun. I'm so glad that there are so many delightful people on this forum. Lynn, you bet I drive it! That is very important. You don't have to do it often, or like it, but you DO need to learn how. And learn to hook it up to the truck. It's a safety issue. You never know when you will be somewhere when DH gets sick and needs help with you being the only way to get where he can have it. DSIL's mother refuses to drive theirs. She even rides on the bed and watches movies while he drives. Oh, sorry, theirs is a motor home like ours. He got the flu on the way home from TX a few years ago. He wasn't so bad that he couldn't have ridden, but wasn't able to drive. They sat in a campground for a week. Also, they have been in the middle of no where many times. What if he had a heart attack? She couldn't drive it if she had to. Mind you, I am not wishing bad luck/health on anyone, but you just never know. Have the dealer give you some tips. Has your DH ever driven towing? Learn to back it, too. Also, big empty parking lots are your friend while you learn. Open highway is easy. My first time was from the first rest area in KY out of OH going south. Umm, can you say lots of traffic to merge into?! I still want to put a big sign on the back saying "New to driving an RV. Thanks for your patience!"! DH says I drive it better than he does cause I'm still afraid of it. You may not want to know some of the places he's taken it! I think he's added to my grey hair!l Mind you, he is a pretty safe driver. Another camping club to look into is Passport America. You get 50% discounts certain places, certain times of the week. It can pay for itself in two stays! I think it's $20/year, not sure. Gee, some campgrounds are $30/night! And KOA's are usually a lot more. Don't get me wrong, we do stay at KOA's but not often. You can be sure of a good clean place to stay with level spots. And almost always right off the highway. But they are expensive. Also, if you are going out west, look into Bureau of Land Management. Some places have free camping available. Be sure to check for safe areas. Also, some Walmarts offer free 1 night stays, depending on local laws, policies, and safe areas. Cabella's and Bass Pro also may let you stay one night free. Always check with the management first. In those cases, no leveling jacks, chairs, or grills are allowed. I'll keep thinking! Tami

Thanks for the kitchen compliments. The granite is Impala Black and I love it! Not too busy, not too plain. Easy to decorate around. Monochromatic means one color. I'd say this actually is monochromatic or close to it--all the same color family. The issue isn't that it is too colorful. The issue is whether it is too busy. That relates to pattern, which I think people often discuss in terms of whether something is too "busy." It is too busy for my taste. If the OPer had said in her first post, I love my new tile, I wouldn't say anything. But since she asked, I do think it is too busy. And I don't think the sunk cost is a reason not to change it. I think it can be changed with not much additional cost by simply pulling down the tile and painting a neutral color pulled from the countertop, or really even a different color which would be a way to introduce color without pattern. And a recent, favorite, not-at-all monochromatic kitchen reveal here that comes immediately to mind is Carrieb's.

Sounds good Brad. I've never had fried green tomatoes and I'm even from the south, shame,shame! Please do tell how you make them. Do they taste like fried eggplant?

I have never eaten fried eggplant, so I wouldn't know how they would taste LOL. They have a sour taste, not like a fully ripe tomato. They are very easy to make. Besides the tomatoes, it's flour and/or cornmeal (bread crumbs work too), milk and/or egg and oil to fry them in. Slice them about 1/4 inch thick, salt both sides of tomato slices, dip into beaten egg/milk mixture, then into breading. Fry in hot oil until golden brown. So yummy. They also make Fried Green Tomato batter (which I think is much better).

Here are the finished tomatoes. They were pretty good. I'll try and get a picture of the cobbler tomorrow.

Yum, Brad, I love fried green tomatoes, and haven't had any this year yet. We always had them for breakfast.

Thank you, everyone!

The cobbler is very good! I had a piece not too long after it came out of the oven. Yum :). Here are the recipes for you, trixietx,

Vidalia Onion Dressing

1 cup onions, diced
2 T. rice (or red) wine vinegar
1/2 cup mayo
2 T. brown sugar

Mix all ingredients and let chill. Serve over fried green tomatoes or use as a dressing for cole slaw.

Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Cake (or Cobbler) Courtesy of Teresa :)

1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
2 cans sliced peaches in heavy syrup (15-16 ounces each)
1 stick real butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place butter in Pyrex baking dish (or similar). Place into oven while it preheats and take out once melted. In the meantime, whisk the flour, sugar and milk together til mostly smooth. Pour over the butter in the baking dish. Spoon the contents of both cans of peaches over the batter. Bake at 350, until golden brown and crust is done (50-60 minutes, depending on your oven). Serve hot with a scoop of ice cream for a wonderful treat!

I ate my piece of cobbler with some Cool Whip and it was heavenly. :) Enjoy!
