Growing a Date Palm from Date seed!
Comments (8)A Sunny isles Florida beach resort has fruiting date palms right dab in front of it. I happened upon them and was shocked to see them producing in Florida. The palms are huge and the dates are all over the ground and in the fountain, bushes and lawn. They look like medjool dates too. The fruit are quite large, dark, sticky and sweet smelling. I'm sure the resort meant to plant canary island date palm and instead got fruiting dates....See MoreGaram Masala and Medjool Date Sorbet
Comments (10)That looks like something I would like to make, and I have a bunch of dates that I wanted to use up. I was going to make date shakes with them, but this would be better since it uses coconut milk, which I also have on hand. When did you add the cornstarch? Did you add it to the sugars before heating, or did you add it when you added the butter? I think I would probably want to add it to the white sugar, but I do not know how long you are supposed to cook it. I have two different type of garam masala, and so I'll have to choose which one to use. Thanks for sharing! Lars...See MoreMedjool Date Hardy?
Comments (8)I grow a number of different types of date palms here in Florida. About as good as you'll do on the east side of the Rockies is growing them in a strong zone 8b. There are some areas that plant them where record cold will eventually take them out (coastal GA, SC, OBX NC). They are slightly more hardy in arid and semi-arid places, like the west coast and southern desert west. My medjools have seen 24F in Jan. 2010 with no damage or negative effects. That being said, probably another 5 degrees lower and the story changes dramatically. I have 7 Cretan Date Palms that are supposed to be a little more hardy. I've heard the reports of this palm being a zone 7b palm, but my belief is that this is largely being pushed by palm sellers. This is their first year in the ground, so no experience to speak from on my end. Even if you had a plant that tended to sucker profusely, it would be a stretch at best for even one well protected offshoot to survive in zone 7 for any length of time. There are claims of date palms surviving high single digits in places like Las Vegas, Nevada or St. George, Utah. How reliable those claims are, I have no idea. In TN, you're looking at having to build some kind of shelter around it in the winter if you keep it outside. If you have any friends living in a solid 8b climate or better... it would make an interesting Christmas gift. If you're really into the idea of growing palms outdoors in TN, you should check in to getting some sabal minors ('McCurtain', or southern Arkansas ecotypes), or needle palms. They are both good understory palms that can grow under live oaks and other large trees that provide overhead canopy (good freeze protection)....See MoreDate crystals and Barhi Dates from Shields Date Gardens
Comments (5)There's not much to a date shake, and I think my banana version was better than what I got at Shields - theirs was a bit too sweet. I did mix some date crystals with water and put the mixture in the freezer, as the instructions said, but the crystals were not completely dissolved. I guess that is not important. A normal date shake is made with ice cream, milk, and date crystals (or dates), and I don't think it is important how you do it. I did love the date shake I had at Shields, even though it was very sweet. It is easy enough to order fresh dates on line, if you cannot find them where you live, and the prices as Oasis are pretty good. For them, the Barhi dates are seasonal, and so I'll get some from them next season....See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
