Happy Canada Day to my Canadian friends.
Besides Independence Day on the Fourth, we Americans are observing another historical anniversary this week.
One hundred and fifty years ago, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1-July 3. It was the turning point in the Civil War, but the price was terrible: 51,000 soldiers were killed in those three days.
There are large re-enactments going on at the battlefield, and many visitors coming to learn about the battle and its effects.
I plan to stay home and watch a favorite movie, called "Gettysburg."

Happy Canada Day!

For me, summer begins with Memorial Day (In Texas it began April Fools Days for me), and I do not have special plans for the long week-end, although if the weather cools off as it is supposed to, we will go for a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains or Malibu. If it is too warm, we will stay near the beaches. We're three miles inland now, and so it is a bit warmer than where we were in Venice, although not drastically so. We might take our bikes to Sycamore Canyon, which is an easy bike ride, but I expect it to be fairly warm there this week-end. Also, there will be a lot of traffic on PCH. We have new hiking sticks that look like ski poles that we want to try out, but we need a steep climb to use them.

Normally we cannot easily see 4th of July fireworks, even though we used to live blocks away from the fireworks in Marina Del Rey. In early July we still get a lot of coastal fog in the mornings and evenings, which keeps us cool but blocks the view. We're still close enough to MDR to see the fireworks there if the sky is clear.

Happy Canada Day to all of you who have influenced me for so long that I often type flavour until my IPad changes it to flavor. You're looking good for 146!

July 4th will be busy for us - working in the morning at a PA Dutch Folk Festival, afternoon potluck cookout with friends and late night fireworks party at a neighbor's house.

I am taking any easy main course to the cookout - nice thick ham steaks I ordered from the butcher and will pick up on Wednesday. We'll grill them with a spicy peach and red pepper sauce. For the fireworks, I'll be getting out the ice cream freezer for a pineapple-mango sherbet.

We had a really great Canada Day spent with great friends at Niagra Falls......lots and lots going on. Fun day which we enjoyed thoroughly.

Mitch, that sounds like a wonderful 3 days to me!

We will celebrate July 4th by taking a Lake Cruise to see the July 4th fireworks on our local lake front. I'm not sure of what the menu holds for us but it's always good eats on this boat!

I have nothing in particular planned, Elery and I have been working hard renovating the kitchen. I just painted countertops and they can't be used for a couple of days. Ashley is in the hospital, the docs think it's her gallbladder. No, kidney stones. No, wait.....oh, they don't know. Ugh. Makayla is signed up for ballet camp and I've been driving her back and forth to Grand Rapids.

Fireworks used to be fun until they started popping them off at every amusement park, ball game, car dealership opening, whatever. Now I don't care if I ever see them again, but Amanda is working on the 4th of July and I might end up with Bud and Makayla somewhere.

Some time ago I was in Grand Rapids visiting a friend in St. Mary's Hospital. There was a huge snow storm which cut off all forms of transportation. I was stuck in the hospital for four days and three nights. Since the nursing staff could not get to the hospital, I volunteered as an assistant nurse.

I hope Ashley will be OK soon.

Happy 4th again, today's the day: we are golfing in Boca and possibly having a buffet dinner at the Beach Club, they have fireworks at 9.

This year we're hitting all of the big celebrations-- St John Baptiste Day in Quebec City & Montreal, pre Canada Day in Ottawa, then Canada Day in Niagara with Sharon and "Himself" and finally at home for the 4th of July! Today's plans are simple, sadly our annual fireworks extravaganza has been cancelled by the high school which normally hosts the event. It will be a bbq dinner and fireworks on TV.
Happy belated St John Baptiste Day, Canada Day and now have a sizzling Fourth!
