Mantis_oh, The stats on that Sense Of Wonder seedling are 28" scape with 4 way branching, 20 buds, 6" bloom. Pic below is of 2 blooms. As for me, I really love loud, big, and gaudy......love this one for it's size, scape, fantastic fertility, and a lovely simple sense of elegance. Enziandom has a looser habit than Mathilda Gutges. Mathilda Gutges can droop a bit before gets fully established. Our plants were grown in bright open shade with ~2 hr direct morning sun a day. We have recently been seeing another nice mid blue hydrangea being offered locally called 'Blue Danube' which looks more like a compact 4' plant. Also even more compact (3', 4' in five or ten yr) and always very intensely colored is 'Bottstein', an excellent but relatively unknown older cultivar. It is better known as a UK cut flower. Always intense in color, it blooms strongly and can make a wonderful purple, or dark dusky rose color too. When grown as a blue, it can be purple flushed, unless the pH is acidic enough. I've read that when people see it in bloom, it can outsell about anything else in nurseries. Our little bush has wonderfully dense full growth.

Dan, I'm getting a few scapes now also. Overall my garlic is looking good. Can sure tell a difference between the first I planted and that I planted later. The warmer days here along with the rain has things jumping in the garden. The potatoes have grown 10-12 inches in the last few days. Hard to believe how fast they are growing. Jcepine you can eat the scape if you desire. Many feel that removing the scape makes the bulb bigger. I've done it both ways and done a comparison by measuring and weighing each bulb. I've never seen any difference. Last year my biggest bulb was one I left the scape on. I only remove them if someone wants them too use. Jay

Ah, that just makes my mouth water dcarch! You all introduced me to scapes last year (I had a whopping 6 of them) and I found heaven : ) None this year, sadly as I didn't have any hardnecks to plant last fall. Someone, I think functionthenlook, mentioned scape soup. Didn't have enough for that last year. What a wonderful bounty of scapes you've got! Hoping to plant some this fall. Doubt I can go another year without 'em, especially after that photo.
