Yet Another Cast Party Approaches

Hi everyone,

I found this recipe today while searching for something that wouldn't spoil, doesn't have to be reheated or kept refrigerated for our next cast party. Lo and behold, I found this super easy recipe. I am using strawberry pie filling instead of pineapple. I found it over on Gooseberry Patch's website.

Easy Angel Food Cake Bars

16-oz. pkg. angel food cake mix
21-oz. can pineapple pie filling

Combine dry cake mix and pie filling; blend until smooth. Pour batter into an ungreased 15"x10" jelly-roll pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden and top springs back when lightly touched. Cool in pan; cut into squares. Makes 2 dozen.

Sounds simple enough and I know it'll make enough for the party. I'm also thinking of sprinkling a little powdered sugar on them after taking them out of the oven. I wonder how these would taste with other flavored fruit pie fillings?

Our second play of the year is a comedy called "Dearly Departed". I've never seen it before, but from what I hear, it is another smash hit.

Brad, I've never had it with strawberries, but my secretary used to make that with a box of angel food cake mix and a can of pineapple in juice, it was a "Weight Watchers" recipe and there were always several women in the office trying to lose weight, so it was popular. I don't think she used the powdered sugar, though, because if she had I'd have gotten it all over myself, LOL.

LOL Annie, none of us at the theatre are on a strict diet, save for the dogs that belong to some of the other theatre members. (There's Lucy, an older Beagle. Bates, a Black Lab puppy. Last, but most certainly not least, is Sylvia, whom is such a diva, especially at lunch LOL). Anyways, I hope these turn out okay. I may have to check the lemons the next time I go to the store to see how fresh they are so I can make some lemonade to take along ;-).

I remember your salad. Haven't tried it yet. I'm a big fan of cauliflower and have learned to like broccoli too. I also like the "medley" that comes under a variety of names, California Medley, Normandy, etc, that also includes carrots. If you like carrots, some shreds in there would add some color and flavor. If you like a little kick, use a pepper jack cheese. Don't skimp on the bacon buddy! :D That punch is an old recipe and frankly, I like it. There's a lot of variations. OJ will substitute nicely although don't be afraid to try the pineapple juice in there. With the other flavors it won't be overpowering. I'm not a big fan of pineapple either but it mixes in well and adds something. Good luck and hope you enjoy the cast party. How often do they occur?

I knowed it had to be something simple, just couldn't work it out. The squash sounds like a perfect accompaniment to the pork. I think I'd go with something a little more visually assertive than white asparagus, though. The pork & pears are essentially white, ya know. Maybe sweet & sour red cabbage?

I'm so pleased to have this feedback. Hi again, Rosie - such encouraging comments, and I really appreciate your remembering & being sensitive to our goals w/ respect to views. Actually, if I removed or narrowed that "spice pullout" to the right of the cooktop, we could shorten the island back from the traffic line - I'll definitely try that. And while the prep area no longer faces squarely through the living rm to the water, I think that it would be more-than-OK, given the glass expanse in doors to deck & your notion of the repeated happy encounters w/ the view as one moves w/in the work space. I did have a question for you from previous thread: you had mentioned a scary "close call" w/ a basement stairway - may I ask which side of the basement doorway (as one is standing in front of the door) would be best for the hinges to be on, in your experience/opinion? Thanks in advance for that and for all the times you've responded - you've been so helpful & supportive. And hello again to you, bmorepanic! Good questions about the microwave - it's been a pesky issue. Yes, I do frequently use our MW (22 yrs old & counting - guess we'll never bet on that lifespan again, from what I hear) to steam veggies, as well as to serve my coffee-reheating habit. One of the few efficient things about the layout of our existing kitchen is that the MW is on the counter right behind my chair at the table - I can reach back w/ my coffee mug, nuke, & retrieve w/out even standing up! Not that a little more excercise would be a bad thing - I will indeed consider your suggestion & would love to hear any others you have. JeannieMer, hello & again I'm SO thankful to you and others who take the time to read, consider, & then actually propose layout changes. In many homes, having the cleanup sink & DW where you've placed them would make lots of sense; our planning is self-complicated by the fact that we're trying to move the cleanup area away from that wall! Given that, I'd be grateful to see what else your obviously-logical approach to things could come up with - please post more ideas!

I frequently make a dill dip, and I add a bit of lemon juice and garlic to it. I bought a small bunch of dill (for $1.00) at the Hollywood Farmers' Market last Sunday, but I used most of it to make a large batch of tartar sauce, which is similar to your dill dip, but it has pickles in it. It is definitely a good idea to use fresh dill (if possible) instead of dried, as it will have more flavor. I planted some dill seeds last week, and they are just now beginning to come up. Have you tried growing dill yourself? I have a lot of parsley in my yard right now - that is also easy to grow. If you add garlic and lemon to your dip, you can use regular salt instead of seasoned salt. I mash the garlic in a mortar & pestle with a bit of Kosher salt to make a paste, and I substitute this for seasoned salt. If you use dried onions instead of fresh (I use chives because I also have those in my yard), you will probably need to thin the dip a bit, but lemon juice will work for that. You might want to add some freshly ground black pepper also. Using cream cheese instead of mayo will also make the dip too thick, but you can use it if you thin it with milk or lemon juice.

When I first saw that recipe quite a few years ago,
It said to bake in an Angel Food cake pan.
So that's the only way I've ever made it.
Nor have I ever used the strawberry pie filling.

It is good with blueberry, cherry, or pineapple pie filling.
Honestly, I think any fruit pie filling that you like
Would be good!

The dusting of powdered sugar
sounds like an excellent idea!

I haven't made it in years,
So now I'm anxious to try it in the bar form.

And by all means,
take your Gram's lemonade, too! ! ! ! !

The first kind of pie filling I thought of using for this recipe was strawberry. I don't really care for pineapple, and people usually like angel food cake with strawberries on it, so I made a connection. I agree about using any kind of fruit pie filling in this recipe. I thought about using blueberry pie filling sometime, too. However, Wal-Mart was all sold out of it when I was there yesterday. I wonder how peach pie filling would go with this recipe?

I'm always happy to hear that my gram's lemonade is so popular with friends. I have it memorized now, so I can tell people or write it for them on the spot if they want the recipe.

Then again, for some of the cast it might be more appropriate to have Devils Food Cake.

(I've been involved in lots of amateur plays and I've never encountered a cast composed of 100% angels.)

Arley, LOL. Well, not every company, or everyone for that matter, is perfect, no matter how hard we try. I learned that a long time ago. Maybe this'll sweeten them up a little lol.

Making the bars and beverage tomorrow. I bought more tea today at the one local grocery store, so I'm undecided on which beverage to make. When I made the iced tea for the last workday, they all loved it.
