roaster oven questions

One reason I would like a roaster oven is to make stock. I suspect it would be easier than on top of the stove. I'm not sure I know enough to even ask the right questions. Here's what I'd like to know for starters.

How good are they as a substitute for a crockpot?
Is it possible to sear a roast in one, then set for a slow roast?
Are there advantages to different sizes?
What features should I look for?

I'll appreciate any thoughts on this.
