Method for making sprigs from Sod
Comments (6)texas-weed. stolonizing (broadcast sprigging) creates a much quicker lawn than plugging. i was originally looking into plugging, but don't want to wait that long for it to fill in. i am going to prepare the soil the same way, no matter if i seed, sprig, or plug -- so if i can find an efficient way to produce sprigs from sod, it will actually be less work than plugging. tiemco - yes, i asked the sod producer. they offer sprigging, but the machine they use shreds the sod into sprigs and plants the sprigs - not something that makes sense on my 1/4 acre lawn. they don't have a separate machine for creating sprigs for delivery to a customer. the sod producer has kindly offered to ask around though, to see what he can do. i just want to be prepared and not assume that he'll find something - and was hoping someone reading this forum might have experience with this issue. thx again! Comments (6)Undoubtedly someone will say that you can cut more than 1/3 off - they usually do when I say to leave 2/3's of the plant. Leaving 2/3's of the living plant is the rule of thumb for pruning and herb harvesting. Mint will survive a harder cutting than 1/3 off, but it will take it longer to bounce back and regrow enough for you to harvest from again. You're doing the right thing. Start small and slow with your harvesting. You'll get the feel pretty quickly as to how much you can take and how your plant will respond. And if you start slowly in regards to harvesting, you can learn without any of those, "oh, I shouldn't have done that" moments. FataMorgana...See MoreRooting Poplar(?) Sprigs?
Comments (15)populous alba is a favourite landscape tree in my location - absolutely recognisable with that almost luminous white underside to the leaves which shimmers on the ends of those long petioles (although it is true, I am coming to love this previously unfamiliar genus). I have a circle of felled trees around a firepit and even now, 3 years on, they will throw new growth...and will also do that thing of regrowing (and re-rooting) as a row of new branches from a felled horizontal log - phoenix trees. I like to root hardwood cuttings in the ground because I am idle and can dispense with watering but I also use those deep rose pots which hold at least 5litres of potting medium so that the cutting can be planted to a depth of around 8inches. The potting medium for hardwood cuttings is less crucial than seedlings - and in your case, Sylvia, you can make use of the soil around the base of the original tree (which will also have sympathetic micro-life - bacteria and fungi - even a trowel full in an inert potting mix will kickstart the soil associations so essential for plant health. Yep, there may be weed seedlings in garden soil which germinate but easily plucked from the surface of the pot....See MoreTeresa_MN
