I want to buy Spega yogurt glass jars

Does anyone have any of these? I didn't even know they existed until just recently. Spega yogurt was made in Italy and sold in these little (4 oz.?)jars without a lid. Apparently Trader Joes sold them as late as '07 or little later in four packs - I'm not sure. But I've been told they don't sell it anymore. Anyway, I would like to buy a few jars (less than ten, say) if you have any to spare. Thanks so much.

Yes, I did see that, thank you! However, I really would like to buy about 6-10 and she is charging, with shipping, $7 EACH ... that's quite high for me.

What recipe do you use? I use 1 quart milk with 1/2 cup powdered milk added. Heat to 180 degrees F, cool to 105 degrees F. Add 1/2 cup Dannon Plain or homemade yogurt. Incubate for 4 to 5 hours. I've read where the powdered milk adds to the creaminess. Also, you can use your homemade yogurt as a starter but it weakens after several generations, so use store-bought yogurt every now & then. By the way, homemade yogurt makes the best biscuits! 2 cups flour 1 stick butter 4 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. baking soda 3/4 cup plain yogurt With a mixer or by hand, blend flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, & baking soda. Cut cold butter into chunks, then cut into flour until flour looks mealy & many small chunks of butter remain. Stir in yogurt, mix until all flour is incorporated. Add a little water if necessary to incorporate remaining flour. Turn out onto a floured countertop. Knead & flip the dough a few times on the floured countertop so the dough isn't sticky. Pat into a square about 8" by 8", & 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick. (The dough is soft & pillowy.) Cut into 3x4 or 3x3 rows & columns with a floured knife, depending on your desired biscuit size. Arrange biscuits close together on a baking pan, bake at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes. Substitute 1/2 cup whole wheat or rye flour for some of the regular flour for a nice accompaniment to stews & soups. These are quick to make & very good.

These are for display only. I found out today that you can use ascorbid acid or fruit fresh, just as in canning to help maintain the color of the lemons. Afterabout 4 months of being in the jar, the ones I tried to do so far, start to darken, which isn't acceptible for display. When I preserve them for later use in cooking, I slit them and cover with salt and let them stand at room temp.( a pickling process of sorts) Once they are opened they have to go in the fridge. So many decorating and specialty stores sell them in fancy jars, but they are pricey. I was just hoping someone might know their little secret. I had even thought that vodka, etc. might help them not to turn. Then the canning suggestion made since, because you don't want peaches, pears, etc. to turn a funny brown color after you process them....the lemons in the jar are in a liquid and you can see peppercorns also.I think they are very attractive on the kitchen counter but just needed to see if there was some way to keep them looking all bright and yellow. Thanks for your suggestion, now I wonder should I use the vinegar with the fruit fresh stuff, maybe I'll just read the instruction, on the package ( read instructions-last step for me always ---HA HA !)

I think my English is pretty damn good. But I keep getting tripped by idioms and expressions like knock on, knock up, knock out, knock down--each of which have different consequences! I kept laughing sporadically for about a week when I first heard the expression "one ant short of a picnic" from my mother in law. I kept thinking about the ant asking for directions to the picnic. I'm not a native speaker so I say things like "I am conversant in both British and American." For instance, we definitely have a garbage bin, not a trash can. I definitely plant things in the soil, not in the dirt which is the stuff you get on your face after rummaging through the attic. On the other hand, I take the elevator, not the lift to my apartment, not my flat. Nevertheless--and this should make sense---I go to the comfort room for bladder evac, not to the water closet or the bathroom, both of which sound like they have nothing to do with my bladder. You need to scrub vigorously with a scrubby soap and then use clorox bleach and you should be fine with the glass jar. Then discrad the scrubby pad all together The problem is with the cover to the jar which is not totally non-porous the way glass is. I am concerned that may not be totally ok. Can you get a replacement cover?

Arlinek, These Weck Canning Jars might be another option for you.

I saw them recently in a local shop and I'm going to back and buy a few of the different sizes.

Oh Ann, those Weck jars are beautiful. The preserved lemons I made as gifts last year at Christmas would have been even more striking in the Weck tall cylinder jar. I'm going to mark the site, give them a couple weeks to get moved & place an order of several sizes/styles. Thanks for the link!

Arlinek, hope you can locate the Spega yogurt jars! They are also pretty.

I just bought 6 of these a couple of weeks ago in the 3/4 cup size. I'm going to use them for mini desserts. I had good service and quick shipping.

Oh, thank you Ann! If I can't find the Spega, those Wecks will definitely work. As a little pay-it-forward for you and others, I did find them quite a bit cheaper on their own website: http://weckjars.com/products.php - they were about 50% cheaper than the Canadian link you provided and ditto for the Kaufman link from evenshade. I didn't get to figure out the shipping yet, however. Thank you all for pointing this out to me; I'd never heard of them and spent 2 hours searching all my options prior to writing.

What awesome looking jars! More things I didn't know I needed but now want...

I've had customers ask for tall, narrow canning jars, but the only ones I had seen were antique Ball freezer jars. Now I have a source to refer people to. :)

Weck isn't too far from my house so once a season I hop in the car and go get some. Even without shipping I think they are pricey but so worth it.

Did you ever find the jars? I have a bunch that were saved by my 73 year old aunt. She is closing up her old big home in san Francisco and downsizing to a smaller one in Cape Cod. I am sure I can convince her to part with some. Thanks. Laura
