Cook's Country Corned Beef & Cabbage
Comments (17)DC, I do something similar with our corned beef. My husband is on a salt-restricted diet, but he & I dearly love corned beef. So when it's on sale for St. Patrick's Day, I get a hunk and soak it for two days, changing the water at least 2 times a day. Then I cook it in fresh water in my slow cooker. Once the water comes to a simmer/boil in the slow cooker, I change the water again. I know I'm losing flavor, but these are necessary steps for his health's sake. Yet in spite of all that water, the corned beef tastes pretty good -- much milder than regular but tasty nonetheless. So we can enjoy a corned beef & cabbage dinner and corned beef sandwiches for lunch the next day. And no swollen, painful feet or congested lungs from over indulging....See MoreBoil pork ribs before grilling or broiling
Comments (21)Bob_b: I have to disagree with some of the others. Having done them both ways for years, I have found that there is no lost flavor, by boiling them. But you can't boil them vigorously, just Simmer them, very slow, just about bubbling. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LouÂs Broiled Spare Ribs and Finger Licking Good , Sauce I use Country Style or Sizzlers , cut a little thicker than 1/2 inch,I like a little meat with the bones. For about 3 1/2 lb. of meat. Put a pot of water to boil, on the range top, with just enough water To cover the Ribs. Add: 1/3 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning , Garlic Powder and Onion Powder. An Italian pinch of Ground Cloves , Basil and Oregano 1/4 Teaspoon of Black Pepper 2 Bay leaves Simmer for about 90 minutes ( very low , not boiling ) Meanwhile, put in a small bowl : 1/2 cup of Bullseye or Krafts Original Barbecue Sauce 1/2 cup of Ketsup 1/2 teaspoon of Mustard 1/4 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning 1/3 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder & Onion Powder An Italian pinch of Cloves , Basil and Oregano Black Pepper - to taste. 2 tablespoons of Brown Sugar and Maple or Pancake Syrup 2 Heaping tablespoons of Grape Jelly and Strawberry Jam Smooth out the Jelly and Jam with a fork and mix well. This may sound like overpowering sweetness but it is not and Caramelizes perfectly. - - - - - - - - - - - - I use a 9x 13 SS pan and lay some Sauce on the bottom. Then I lay in the simmered Ribs and spoon the Sauce on them. If there is some sauce left over , save it for basting when the ribs are almost done. I cook them in an electric range Broiler, set on Low, Placed on a shelf about 8 inches below the burner. They will cook in about 25 minutes. Test after 20 minutes Ummmmmmmeemm Gooooooooood !!!!!!!! Lou PS: There are many who will dissagree with this method but have never tried it. And some say they don't like the sweet sauce but have never tried that either. I've gotten great feedbacks....See MoreWhat colors worked in your NW-facing low-natural-light rooms?
Comments (31)Thank you for your help everybody, I finally found one color that works in both rooms. It is a BM Gentle Cream which is in the off-white collection. I wanted more color but it looks like with the northern exposure combined with the low ceiling and narrow rooms there is just no visual space for anything more intense. Gentle Cream actually lives up to its name, it doesn't look pink or peach in either room and not too yellow either (Papaya was a little too yellow). And yes, the type if bulbs makes a big difference. We have some kind of "true light" in the DR, similar to Reveal and this particular color looks more yellow there. The LR has halogen recessed lights and the color has a slight green tint to it in that room. I also encountered this issue in my kids' bathroom. Picked a countertop which looked beige-cream in the showroom, almost exactly like the color of the tile we selected. I did cheked the sample at home but during the day, the lighting wasn't istalled yet in the bathroom. Once installed, the counter looked almost yellow in the bathroom with the regular flood bulbs. I couldn't believe I was so off with the color! However, after we switched the bulbs to white light it looks a lot closer to what I thought I picked...See MoreA new LOW for P&G. Disgusting!
Comments (15)@sandy1616 I'm not trying to dispute your claims, but the pet food disaster I believe was sometime in 2007. I remember being really mad about it, too... even though we didn't have a dog. It just crushed me... knowing all those poor animals, defenseless... because some worthless, classless, piece of s@!t out there, was more concerned about profits... then others. It's worth noting though.. P&G wasn't to blame. The *recall* affected over 150 different brands of Pet Food. Edit - The FDA... has a very lengthy and well written briefing on the events, and why it happened on their website. http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/RecallsWithdrawals/ucm129932.htm Now... P&G did *sell* off the Iams & Eukanuba pet food brands, sometime in 2014... But, I think they are still being manufactured in the same facility. I *did* a lot of research into this, because I was extremely concerned... when I heard the news about this. "Mars" pet food... is the company who makes, Pedigree. Not that there's anything wrong, with that brand, per say... It's just, if I was a pet-owner, I wouldn't feed my dog that brand. I'd probably stick with Blue Buffalo or Iams. That's what I'd feel more comfortable with... There was even a time before P&G took over Iam's in '99. Apparently they substituted some ingredients for slightly more corn-meal, and the sudden change, upset a lot of pets stomachs. Not that Corn-Meal... is the best ingredient, but... Iam's isn't a bad brand. It's definitely one of the higher tiers, until it's changed......See Morejimster
