I didnÃ¢ÂÂt post it here because I didnÃ¢ÂÂt want to get political but back in April my senator, Boxer, introduced a bill to label all GMO foods. The only reason it would be political is itÃ¢ÂÂs the first time I have ever agreed with her on any subject.LOL

After the vote here in Ca, labeling on all GMO foods, that lost it was discovered that Monsanto had lied in all their political ads. There commercials were nonstop and if you paid any attention at all you knew it was all lies but people bought it and voted against it.

Maybe there is hope yet for eating food in this country without having to worry that it may be killing us I read several articles about the outrage from constituents after Monsanto got another pass because it was buried deep in another bill that had nothing to do with food.

Well, it's a start!

Anything that can be done to open the eyes of those that turn their heads because "ignorance is bliss" is a good thing.

Mike, "I don't give a kumquat whether we are warming or cooling..." I am offended by your implication that there is anything negative about kumquats. They are great. I grew up with a tree that bore way more fruit than I could ever eat, and the extras served as excellent ammunition for throwing at my friends--especially the green ones b/c they are much harder. :) It is pretty funny with this current cold weather how much people on both sides of the debate cite it as evidence in their direction. As if one piece of datum out of context can lead to any kind of significant conclusion. Whenever winter rolls around gardenweb seems to slow down, which I find annoying considering I live NorCal where we don't have much of a winter. So I appreciate discussion topics that I find interesting regardless of how "on topic" they are for the various forums. I do find it interesting all the people that chime in about how this isn't a worthwhile discussion. In a free society, isn't any any all discussion worthwhile? You are free to discuss and free not to. Cousin floyd, do you not think that colony collapse disorder exists, or are you just saying you don't think it is a new thing? I didn't realize that was even a controversial topic. ryan

I'm surprised to see a 13yr old thread about quack grass that doesn't include posts from me. [g] I had a huge problem with Quack Grass about 15 years or more ago. I didn't know how bad it was to start. I had it in my vegetable garden. I tried weeding it out and it kept coming back. Then I decided to rototill my vegetable garden. What a mistake that was!! It just cut all the roots up into tiny pieces that all rooted and took off. It was so bad that I gave up my vegetable plot for 2 years. I kept looking online for solutions and something caused me to get the idea to cover it with plastic. Solarization. I had left over 3mil thick clear pliastic from an old ice rink in the garage and I used that to completely cover a 25x20ft vegetable plot one hot summer. I left it on there for a year weighed down with bricks. No holes in the plastic to allow water through. That's what it took. I haven't seen quack grass in my garden since.

The new director of the National Arboretum has suspended but not cancelled plans to remove the Glenn Dale Azalea Hillside, the National Boxwood Collection and the Perennial Gardens. The new funding is about half of what they say they need to keep things the way they are. Most people close to the arboretum think that many plants are still in jeopardy. Apparently the people that made the bad decision in the first place want to keep face by removing plants which don't have labels. The fallacy in that is that these plants have been documented for about 80 years with plot maps and volunteers are actively using these maps to verify the identity of these plants. Some are very valuable plants such as the striking bi-color which was named "Ben Morrison," after the developer of the Glenn Dale Azaleas and founder of the National Arboretum, by Dr. John Creetch when he was director of the Arboretum and after Morrison had died. The interesting fact is that the azalea "Ben Morrison" has unknown parentage. Some of the plants that are documented are descendants of plants that were not documented. Yet they say that the descendants are documented. How do they make these useless distinctions. Partst, I heard the industry (Monsanto and the like) put a lot of money into advertising to say how "safe" it was. If it was so safe, I don't think there would be a need for labelling in the first place. Don't want to interrupt that money flow....
How about the Monsanto Protection Act that was passed earlier this year? I would like to think the organic sector is making steps but I don't see how with bills like this passed. It is very worrisome.
Unfortunately, along with the "ignorance is bliss" brings the "food" is cheap and I find that is what people want. I know very few who will spend a bit more for better quality food. It's a shame.

If you want to see an interesting program, PBS had a show on called Food, Inc. I think it was part of the Nova series, I'm not sure though. It talked about the legislation that prohibits speaking against certain foods, how they go after farmers that try to save seed and more. Extremely interesting to me anyway.

Food Inc. was a movie/documentary that came out a few years ago. It was very good.

I'm all for anything that helps organic farmers.

I find it ironic that chemically enhanced and gmo farming is considered traditional, but organic is not.
