Canned lump crab meat - fav brands?

I got an a teaser thing from CI recently and one of the teaser articles was on a test of different lump crab meats. They showed a picture of the winning can but I can't make out what it was and it probably isn't available around here anyway. I think I've only seen....Phillips? Is that the big name I always see?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had actually made crab cakes from canned and if so how was it and what was your favorite brand of canned.

I'm not a big fan of seafood but fresh crab cakes when I'm in D.C. or Delaware, yes!

I buy Flower brand crab meat in a 6-1/2 oz. jar. It's much better than anything I've had from a can. It comes from Thailand, however. I tend to buy frozen crab meat if I want to keep some on hand, however.

Costco carries the one-pound cans of Phillips, so that's what I buy. I think the can is $14.99/pound (?) It's pretty good and makes good crab cakes. It's also from Thailand. Lump crab meat from the Chesapeake Bay has become prohibitively expensive. Costco also sells frozen Phillips crab cakes that are pretty good, for frozen crab cakes, and the cost is comparable to buying crabmeat and making your own.

I called for an explanation of the date codes and the crab was 4 years past - threw that out. Goya said not to use the paella either. We'll just have to see about the older chocolate - DD wants to make brownies this weekend so we'll just add some chocolate chunks. Found the studs (builders missed every single screw, and not all had anchors, 1 anchor pulled out), Secured the wire shelves but they still sag from the weight of flour, sugar, oils and vinegars so I may just make plywood or melamine shelves with cleats like we had in the old house. Not that I don't have enough to do... But when I was at my favorite store looking for shoe boxes without lids or similar to corral small items in pantry, I found an electric pressure cooker for $12! Tried it out tonight with frozen ham bone - 1 hour to make stock, then I turned it on "Brown" setting (329 degrees according to manual), added 3 cans of white beans and some spinach, we had soup for dinner in less than 1.5 hours from frozen bone. It wasn't in box but had manual, warranty card, and the little plastic thing that fits over the plug prongs so I think it was brand new. Just have to try Steam and Slow Cook settings, I'm hoping it will replace my slow cooker and rice steamer.

I live in Annapolis. To my knowledge, none of Phillips crabmeat is Maryland crab - it is from overseas. They have closed the restaurant in Annapolis and I would avoid buying their seafood if you want authentic crab meat (like from the USA) . They used to be a family owned restaurant at the beach many years ago, where you stood in line for hours to get a table - back in the good old days! Below is a locally owned Seafood Market. Google Annapolis Seafood Market to look at their website. I have no business interest in them other than as a customer. If you really want fresh crab and you want to pay the shipping, I highly recommend them. This time of year the crabs are not from the Chesapeake Bay. I would never buy crab in a can / tin - pasteurized - changes the texture as well as the taste. Anytime you buy frozen crab meat - thaw it in the frig - container upside down. LOL CEFreeman, grammar police :) When my mom served them, she always called them "crab meatS" and I wasn't sure if that was the official title of the recipe or not. Thank you cat_mom and louisianapurchase. Either of those recipes sound like they potentially could be right (no creole seasoning though in my mom's). I'm going to try to make cat_mom's first and then louisianapurchase's to see which one gets closer to what my mom's tasted like. I am so happy to have found recipes that could work! raee maybe start your own thread with a "lost recipe- seafood casserole" and someone will come along with your answer? We could all be reunited with our childhood favorite foods thanks to the brilliant minds on GW!

I know you're asking for crab cakes, but here's a wonderful crab stuffed mushroom recipe that I made for an appetizer on New Years Eve. Becky * Exported from MasterCook * Crab Stuffed Mushrooms Recipe By : Serving Size : 1 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 18 medium mushrooms (about 1 pound) 7 ounces crab meat 5 green onions with tops -- finely chopped 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon dried savory ground black pepper 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/3 cup mayonnaise grated Parmesan cheese paprika 1 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2 In a medium bowl, combine crabmeat, green onions, herbs, and pepper. Mix in mayonnaise and 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese until well combined. Refrigerate filling until ready for use. 3 Wipe the mushrooms clean with a damp towel. Remove stems. Spoon out the gills and the base of the stem, making deep cups. Discard gills and stems. I'm all for fresh blue crab meat when I can get it but as virginia said, it is expensive (I live in Virginia). I will buy Jumbo Lump Crabmeat from Costco also which is Phillips but once again as Virginia said it is Thailand. Lots of people are fooled by the Phillips name because they (once upon a time) were an excellent Maryland Crab House that had ONLY Blue Crabs from the Chesapeake but not anymore. But I will say that it does taste very similar to blue crab and the cost you can't beat. What I buy at Costco is not in a can but in a 16 oz. plastic container and is Jumbo Lump and it costs $19.99 (jumped a $1.00 this past year). If I buy at Wegman's it is $28.99+.

Chesapeake blue crab can't be beat for flavor. I prefer it to lobster or any other crab I've eaten. It is expensive though if you pay someone else to pick the meat.

I haven't purchased any canned blue crab in ages, haven't even seen it for a long time in the stores I go to. It used to be packed in one pound cans which were pasteurized in a process gentler than regular canning, resulting in a product much like fresh crab meat which would keep well under refigeration. The back fin (lump)meat was packed separately and sold for a higher price.

I think this type of crab meat is not widely distributed, but if you can find it and if you can afford it, you will have a very good product, indistinguishable from fresh.

Most of the crab meat I have consumed was either blue crabs caught by me and the family (a fun sport for all ages) or live crabs bought by the bushel. Boil them up with Old Bay seasoning and dump them on a paper covered picnic table. Crack and pick at your own pace and wash them down with beer (lemonade for the kids). There's no better way to enjoy crabs. And catching them yourself is cheap entertainment.
