Firstly let me say - those of us with a low body temperature who have always had this - it is nothing to worry about ath0ugh it does have its problems. Anyone who has only recently become 'cold' there may be another reason for it so do get it checked out. My daughter is in her final year of a nursing degree and was talking to one of the docs about this. It is unusual but not unheard of - I think most people who are colder than usual are not aware of it, nurses very rarely put down if you have a low temperature as they fear it would make them appear sloppy by not checking properly. The real difference for most people is our 'immunity' to bugs - bugs are very temperature reliant and they do not like our cold bodies. However when we come across a bug that is less susceptible to temp changes we effectively go down 'like a ton of bricks' and take longer to recover. We don't feel the cold quite as much but we feel the effects - so even if we don't feel cold we can get problems like Reynards where the fingers and toes go white and numb. Unpleasant but as long as you are aware of it and don't get too cold for too long it can be controlled. I also find heat to be a problem - I am not really sure why but I will try to find out more.

Nancy, One thing I've learned from tracking our weather is just how crazily variable it is. Rain gauges on our property often record different amounts of rain, even when they are just a few dozen feet from one another. Thermometers, all but one (it is on our little weather station) of the thermometers are posted at 5' above ground in the shade, and yet they sometimes can differ from 1 to 5 degrees at the same time. It will drive you bonkers if you let it. I just look at the numbers and roll them into averages in my head. Our fires have been bad on days with virtually no wind, which is not necessarily typical. That's so wrong, and so rare given that we have had plentiful moisture for a couple of years now. It is what it is. We just deal with what happens. Sometimes on a bad fire day, some of the conditions come together as expected and we have horrible fires everywhere, but sometimes the humidity doesn't drop as low as expected until wind speed already has really fallen or something. Still, any time fire weather is anything higher than Moderate, we stay extra-alert, and when it is high, critical, extreme or extremely critical, we watch the skies for the slightest sign of smoke. It is sort of the same way with tornadoes. Not all bad tornado days are the same, but even if the tornado risk is only slightly elevated---it only takes one tornado to ruin your day if it hits your community. Fire days are sort of the same. We all need to heed the warnings, though, because we never know when it is our day to be on the hot seat. Bon, Our onions made it through just fine. I think our forecast for last night was 35 and we dropped to 28 at our house around 7 a.m. Once again, no visible damage on anything, though I haven't walked the rows of the garden yet. I just looked at everything from outside the fence. I'm pleased we made it through these 2 nights with no real damage. When the next cold nights hit this week, I hope we'll be as fortunate. I'm keeping my eye on the Convective Outlook for Tuesday, although it currently looks like the more dangerous storms won't be close to us. Things could shift a bit, though, since we're still a couple of days out. I just don't want to have to worry about hail as early as late February or early March. I'm watching the episode of "Weather Gone Viral" on TSC that includes the Moore tornado that hit Briarwood and Plaza Towers elementary schools, as well as many other areas, and it is horrifying to see it all over again. It is odd how long ago 2013 feels already. I'll never forget how horrible that day was, and how awful it was to watch it live on TV in real time on The Weather Channel and to know it was happening to people right here in our state. These shows are such a good reminder to us that weather events can change lives in seconds. While we always worry so much about the weather's effect on our gardens, it still is of no importance in the overall scheme of thing compared to what it does to people's lives. And, in somewhat weather related news (who could forget his role in the movie "Twister"?), Fort Worth native and stupendous actor Bill Paxton unexpectedly passed away following complications from heart surgery. I just thought this was such sad news. He was only 61. I enjoyed the roles he played in so many productions, but my favorite always was "Twister", perhaps because we live in the land of the twister. That is a great site Shule. The bottom line for OP’s question has a lot to do with variety when growing at the temperatures she is experiencing. I’ve had those temps on certain nights in my high tunnels and fruit formed perfectly for most varieties. Sure, some may be catfaced but that depends highly on variety. For instance if you are growing cherry/grape varieties you won’t have catfacing on 99.9% of the fruits. Larger heirloom varieties can catface if you sneeze at them. What wasn’t mentioned is the duration of the lower temps and the other factors mentioned in the UF site. I would not be concerned about high 50s but low 40s for more than a few hours is not good for blossom set. My general feeling is that if I can stand next to the plant without a coat on for the night they can handle the temps and set fruit. I just never have ever proved that. But I need to go now cause I’ve thousands of plants, few blooming, that are being hardened off in a greenhouse and although I have a stove cranking out heat in low 40s, the sun is out bright and to complicate things the wind is whipping up to 50 mph.

Rob333, at that point in time I had several things making me wonder that, and I was contemplating packing up and moving back! But all in all, Columbus is a very good place to live and winters (or summers) in general are not that severe. We usually have one bad winter weather event (like an ice storm or very heavy snowfall or temps well below zero) each winter though, and lately it seems one damaging summer storm. This year has been unusually hot and/or muggy for the years I've lived here. You know the old saying, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity". That is true for me. I don't mind 90+ if the RH is less than about 45% -- find it quite comfortable. I remember one visit to Phoenix in the summer, I was walking all over the area near my conference hotel, and enjoying the lovely weather. Got back to find it was actually 110F that day. Of course I was drinking lots of water.
