Live pineapple plants with pineapples at Trader Joe's

As we were leaving Trader Joe's on Monday, we noticed that they were selling live pineapple plants, all with pineapples already growing on them, but not yet ripe. We had already finished our shopping, but I plan to go back to try to buy one or two. They were about $12 each and are attractive plants. I already have a larger pineapple plant in my back yard, but I won't get a pineapple on that until next year. The pineapple plants in the nurseries here cost twice as much as TJ's.

Just thought I would give you a heads' up, as these are probably seasonal and won't be available for very long.

Wish I could get up to our TJ's, but they are two hours away. Hope you get a couple. Post pictures if you do.

My Dad started a pineapple plant fom top of on MANY years ago. After he died, just couldn't leave it behind. It took SEVERL years before it had a "baby". About size of large egg too begin with. When it got to orange size , and bending over stem, cut it off. Super fragrant and hard as a rock. AFter several days on counter... TOTALLY edible, even core.

Yes after fruiting the pine apple plants and all of them die! But you may observe that before dying that plant will set some buds just under the fruit and one single cown on top of the fruit. This crown may be planted and in one year you will have a juice fruit. But you must give the plant tropical hollydays on a resort in a Caribean Island. If you live in a cold place or if you live where bananas and papayas wonÂ´t grow give up and buy them on syrup and canned. Monocarpic plant die after blooming. Agaves and most bromeliads are bye-bye plants that do not anouce life by blooming but say farwell to life. Everything must be started again and again. If you treat them correctely, if you do your best sooner they will die Â´cause sooner they will bloom. Monocarpic plants bring the flowers to their own funeral. This is nothing if the plant is an Aechmea a small one but when it is a Alcantarea imperialis weighting more than 250 kg or a quarter of a ton...humm then you will need a crane to get rid of the rotting death body. Monocarpic is a good plant to teach us tha life and death run together like horse and cariage...If you keep monocarpic plants you are bound to face death and deal with it sooner or later. Unhappily some of the juiciest and tastiest plants are so and also some of the prettiest.

You may want to try the Bromeliad forum as pineapples are of this family. I do believe that like most bromeliads after they bloom, the mother plant will shoot some side shoots or "pups" then eventually die. Don't know if your plant will fully ripen for you, but it is said of pineapples that they don't continue ripening after they are picked, so you want to make sure it's ripe when you pick it. Look for yellow color.

I'm not sure how they grow out in the field but I've grown a bunch of them over the years and it seems the first year or so it goes kinda slow. I've planted a few out in my yard and they seem to grow a little faster but I've just left them out as winter comes because they take up so much space. I think on a plantation they grow very fast for a couple of years and go to fruit getting several feet tall but I've never seen it. That photo was in feb 09, they were about 2 years old then. They were potted in 2 quart paint buckets from the hardware store, I melted a dozen or so drainage holes in them using a soldering iron, last summer I switched them to 5 quart buckets. the grow mix is 50/50 shredded wood chips and organic potting soil. I keep them wet, very wet, I flood them until the tray underneath is full of water and leave it to evaporate but I do let it go dry for a couple of days at a time about once a month. When I repotted them there was no sign of root rot. They only get morning sun, almost from sunrise until around 11 am and that is through a slightly tinted window. They would probably grow bigger and faster with better light. I have grown pineapples in water but they grow a lot of roots fast but the plant grows slowly. The third smaller one was newly potted, I gave it away so I don't know how it's doing. I'll take a few new pictures in the next day or two to show you how much change has occurred. Danny

I'm not sure if my experience will help, but I'll try. I have dwarf cavendish outdoors in a shaded location and they can stand shade in lieu of full sun, but they grow slower, and pup less frequently. I know you read that bananas feed a lot, and they do, but not as much as you plan. When I moved in they were neglected for a year (bank foreclosure) and were fruiting so they were neglected on watering and food. Now that they get irrigated at least weekly whether by rain or hose and are fed more regularly they are still slower to pup and fruit than other cultivars I have that get the same attention but more sunlight. So my advice would be to mulch them, don't let them dry out, feed "regularly" but vary the food source. Bananas also like clean wood ash, but don't use ash from paper or cardboard. As far as pups go, once the korm grows and spreads I think you'll have to find bigger buckets too. I also think you'll do better with multiple pots of bananas rather than one. I find that on occasion my pups will outperform the parent in fruit growth and pup production just by being in a different location. I hace some 8 or 9 different bananas and find very different growth habits based mostly on light.

Lars, I have three T.J. around me, 5 minutes, 15 minutes and one I pass by every day on my way to work.

I have to check it out.

BTW, my Yuzu tree has 10 little oranges (marble size). Going to look for recipes to use Yuzu.

My Yuzu tree also has fruit, but I have not counted how many. I also have a bottle of Yuzu juice that I have not yet opened.

Yesterday I went to TJ's and bought two pineapple plants. I'm not sure how much sun to give them - the pineapple plantations I've seen were growing in full sun in the tropics, but when I put my other pineapple plant in full sun, the leaves seemed to get a bit burned, and so I put it in partial shade. The tag with the plant said "bright light" but also indicated that it could be grown indoors if you are not in zones 9-11. I put one of the new plants in full sun (see below) and the other one in partial shade, next to the other pineapple bromeliad. I will move the one in full sun if it starts to get burned.

Gal at work heard you could grow them from the top of a fresh pineapple after it has been cut off. She gave it a try and sure enough it sprouted roots and became a plant for her. Farmer's wife so she has some skill in growing things but I don't think she had to do anything special.

I'd probably use some rooting hormone... about $3 for a jar containing a lifetime supply at Wallyworld garden section.

I love house plants that produce something edible... hot peppers, rosemary being my favorites so far.
