My 2011 grow list...what's your opinion...and your list?
Comments (71)I don't post here a lot, but I do on the Canadian forums. I lurk here :-) I don't grow a lot of tomato varieties but I do grow for quality. This year I have one plant, grown form a seed of the original Gordon Graham tomato. He has the world's record largest tomato according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Through good fortune and a friend, I was able to trade for just a few seeds from Gordon Graham's world record tomato. I got one to germinate, so I have one tomato plant that is a direct child of his original! I do grow other tomatoes but I'm really excited about this one! We had a very bad tomato year last year with lots of BER. This year I planted the tomatoes in my good lasagne "wine" garden, dug in lots of old manure, a little lime and one Tums tablet in each hole. The same friend who gave me the seeds above, told me that a Tums will help supply the calcium the tomatoes need to help prevent BER. So I'm trying it. It's easy and cheap, so I figured "Why not?" We'll see how it goes. Needless to say, I baby that plant! In addition to that one, I am also growing our own heritage Portugal beefheart tomatoes (see link to pic below), San Marzano, Manitoba, Ailsa Craig, and Rev Morrow long keeper. Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreDo you use a cover for your cooktop? What is your opinion on this one?
Comments (32)A little history. The noodle board vs stove board:. The noodle board is used in homes where pasta is traditional. The stove board is used in homes where summer kitchens are common (summer kitchen is a kitchen outside of the house, so you don't heat up the hs. in the summer). For those of us where neither pasta or summer kitchens are part of the culture we call this the pastry board. It moves around to many surfaces, stove, table, dry sink etc. And we always had a marble piece to fit it so we could do butter pastry. Once we had electricity (1959) we kept it permanently on the old wood cooking stove, since the new electric stove was hidden in a tiny pantry (we weren't really ready). So, don't feel bad if you don't know what a noodle board is, your ancestors probably didn't eat pasta much. I use a noodle rack myself because it's takes up less space. My pastry board is well over 100 yrs old, is 30 inches wide, all one slab of wood! It hangs from a square nail attached to my possum belly kitchen queen (now coffee station). I use it as my grand mother did, and love that it softens my cooktop....See MorePlease, your opinion matters. What's yours about my set up for Phals?
Comments (8)Nancy thank you ! I was hoping I would get a quick response and activity more than normal theses days. )) James, what's up !?? Good to see you. I still have visions of your beautiful in home might I add orchids. Going to the orchid show tomorrow and can not wait. First the pictures then I‘ll fill in the detail on my computer This is them. They are fragrant ones sitting to the right side of a south facing window. They are sitting on the pebbles for extra humidity getting morning light and some over head artificial on cloudy long dark days. South facing window at one of my homes. Sitting about a foot back from it. In this window my gardenia grows like wild letting me know there is lots of light. The Phals are just to the right of them not getting the direct straight on sunlight like these do or the window plants. Humidity is usually this high all winter long unless I shut the humidifier off which at times I have to. See my over hanging lights? I have the top flat grow lights or I can use the 100 watt daylight LED bulbs or I could use both on cloudy days all winter. I use them for at least 10 hours on dark days. Not at all when the sun shines. To the top right at the ceiling I also have a skylight that allows above them 8 feet to the right . I also have a ceiling fan for air movement above them a small table fan on oscillating all day long towards them. Lots of air movement.Normal temps on cloudy days and at night about 65. Higher than that on sunny days. The humidifier set on low.Any advice gratefully appreciated. I know I have to water properly and keep them in the right mix. But with the right watering and the mix do you think they will be happy? Anything else I should do? Thanks a bunch to all in advance....See MoreI know you're not doctors but I'd still like your opinion
Comments (28)It looks better this morning.......the red is fading. So all is good. All is well. Now you don’t need to do anything else. The pharmacist would likely recommend otc hydrocortisone, topical Benadryl, and other anti itch topicals. When I got stung by a bee when dead heading a marigold bloom, I remembered a remedy told by my mom about turmeric, so I immediately ran back inside and made a paste of turmeric powder, then applied & gently massaged on to the affected area between my thumb and forefinger. 30 minutes later, the swelling and pain were nearly gone. An hour later it was like nothing happened there. From there on I use this remedy for insect bites. I always have a turmeric powder bottle on my spice shelf to use occasionally in some dishes. Turmeric powder is also used to reduce arthritis pain and inflammation when taken internally. Several years ago, The People’s Pharmacy talk show discussed an arthritis remedy using this powder. I referred to this talk show and recommended it to a dear friend’s mom who had arthritis pain in her arm/shoulder joint. She took a teaspoon every night and it started working for her in a few weeks. She has taken it every night ever since. When I had a surgery on my jaw bone, I took turmeric powder, along with using ice pack. Worked well to control inflammation without taking ibuprofen which often does not go well with my stomach. Can you see how much I like turmeric powder. That said, people must consult with their doctor or pharmacist if they want to take turmeric while on certain prescription drugs or under a treatment regimen....See Moreannie1992
