A 1 1/2 Competition Winner?

There has been a few discussions recently here about bacon. In the past couple of months, I won 1 1/2 cooking competitions sponsored by two other food forums, using lots of bacon.

First, the 1/2 winner. A cooking forum had a competition with "Breakfast" for the theme. Since I had won a previous competition from that forum, I didn't submit an entry this time to give other members a chance to win. A member came to me and ask for my help to suggest plating and ingredients for her recipe. Her dish won the competition. Lots of bacon in her dish. Perhaps I am the 1/2 winner for that dish :-) ?

Another forum's competition with the theme "Pasta"

My entry which won the competition was this multicolored/flavored bacon carbonara dish, topped with smoked shrimps and scallops. Beets for red, eggs for yellow, ramps for green and black garlic for black. Bacon wrapped asparagus is "Violetto d' Albenga" Italian purple asparagus

I have not received the prices yet. There will be food stuff plus a $50 gift certificate.

You have to eat, so you cook. If you have to cook, why not have some fun? I don't actively look for competitions to enter, but if you guys know of some, I would like to check them out.

Hi - don't know if the question is still open or not, but here's my .02: We are in an area that sounds similar to yours. It's basically a commuter suburb with most everyone working in NYC. Extremely competitive, particularly with regard to schools. My older son is in a Montessori preschool that we had to apply to well over a year in advance. The private school he'll be starting in 2004 (he's spending his K year in Montessori), we needed to apply to in Jan. of this year. Because the Montessori doesn't start until the kids are 3 (they must be 3 by Dec. 31), I had my older son go to a 2's program at a local temple. It was 3 days a week, 3 hours a day. My younger son will start that same 2s program this fall, but I was definitely vascillating and will probably only send him 2 days instead of 3. It's a nice program, but like most 2's programs, is basically enriched day care. We could have done without it, but there were a few reasons that I liked it. He DID learn quite a bit, especially religious stuff, which is where I tend to be a bit lax. He got used to being around, and listening to adults other than me, it reinforced many things taught at home but not often practiced like sharing, turns, being kind to others, proper manners, etc. And most importantly - it gave me a 3 hour break three days a week. Besides my work, I was able to read, shop, visit with friends and work out entirely unencumbered by my kid. I found that after a few hours without him, not only did I miss him, but I really wanted to spend time talking to him about his day and what he learned. I think the time off made me a better mommy. Worth It To Go From 1 1/2 to 2 Baths?

"Will it make a huge difference for resale to have 2 full baths vs. 1 1/2 baths in this type of property when it comes time to sell?" Well, it certainly will make a difference. There is really no arguing that a whole bath is more valuable than a half bath. The only real question is whether adding onto the bath will raise the home value more than the cost of the renovation. That question is 100% local. Assuming your numbers are correct (400 ft garage/master and smallest home in the neighborhood) expanding the bath sounds like it will probably be a winner.

thanks for the tips. If I am silly enough to replace the perfectly fine dryer- not entirely my call on that one- then I think I am going with Miele as it may be worth the extra money for a vastly superior product. If I do not buy a new dryer then I think I am going with Electorlux and save $1,500 at least if not $2,000 but I will need to be prepared to go down this road in 10 years again. Sears is going out of business in Canada so there may be deals to be had on Electolux. I know of a good developer friendly - warehouse looking like store just north of Toronto and I will check them out and along with Sears and see if someone gets me a very good value for money deal, sticking to the appliances listed above. (If I can get a Speed Queen for $500 more than electrolux - 50% more- then I am buying it all night and all day etc. as that would be the best value etc.)

It was a tough contest. Great entries by everyone. I won because I focus a little more on presentation than the others.

Congratulations. The second picture works better as pure art than many abstract works I've seen in museums.

The pasta sauce is flavored with Meyer lemon from my tree, and the Meyer lemon blossoms added a very nice scent to the dish.

Congratulations! And your presentation is fabulous. Scallops, shrimp, pasta and bacon - my hubby would be in 7th heaven.
Going to bookmark this for if/when I ever have a real working kitchen again. (We're slated for a 6/30 completion move in date)

dcarch, your work is always so beautiful! Such a pleasure to look at someone who combines artistry with culinary expertise.

I was wondering if you ever looked at Ruth Reichl's blogsite? She recently zoomed through the West Coast on a book tour and wrote up three columns on some of her food experiences, including the Michelin 2-starred Benu/SF. Lots of photos of the tweezer-type plating, but very pretty nonetheless:

dcarch, I agree with the complainers, if a festival advertises all you can eat bacon and you don't get any bacon, or only a couple of slices, for $125.00, I'd want my money back.

It's a darned expensive t shirt, with a turkey sandwich and a beer, for $125.00, sheesh.

Someone made a killing on that festival though, or it was horribly poorly planned.

Thank you all, again, for all your inspiring words.

Everyone spends a lot of money and considerations on how to decorate his/hers home, and what to wear each time going out.

I believe that eating is very important. A little visual exercise will make it more pleasurable and it costs no money.
