Anyone want a cookie?

There are so many things going on around Christmastime that I no longer make Christmas cookies.

But the long weekend was a perfect time for DH (experienced dough roller) and me to make some for a picnic today.

How often do you make cookies? I make refrigerator cookie dough about every two months and bake some about every two weeks. The roll-out type like the ones in the pic about 4X a year and drop or bar cookies about every 6 weeks.

What I've done with refrigerator cookie recipes is to lay the plastic wrap out on the counter before rolling the dough, and roll it into the logs inside the wrap. You might even use parchment paper or wax paper instead of or between the plastic wrap and the dough. Just brainstorming here. I've also heard a trick to wrap the cardboard paper towel tube around the log of dough to help keep it round. I haven't tried that yet because I don't use enough paper towels to have those tubes available. That recipe reminds me a lot of Ina Garten's Outrageous brownie recipe. I did a big search on that recently, and these are the few links that were most useful to me. But I am not really planning a DIY, so they may be more for ideas. There was a fantastic recent thread with pics from the piano-hinge person and maybe a pic from buehl? Ricky, those look really good. How strong is the orange flavor with just that one orange in there? I know it's supposed to be subtle, but I still like to taste it. Let's see, drizzle that with some orange glaze, LOL, add some more sugar. (grin) OK, now I'm going to try to post the other two pictures and see how that goes. First the peanut butter cookies, with all the additions. Because that isn't quite enough sugar, between the cookies, the mini M&Ms, the Reese's Pieces and the Reese's peanut buttter cups, The Princess gave them a dusting of "snow" in the form of sugar. Yeah... And the cut out sugar cookies, 5 dozen of them. One dozen for each of the grandkids to decorate and take home and the other dozen for my house. Everyone from the mail delivery person to the UPS driver gets offered a cookie. Outside, of course. You know, I have a plastic tub full of cookie cutters, but the kids always want to make the same shapes every year. I can never convince them to add the camel because no one wants to frost anything brown, LOL. I even suggested chocolate, but no go. And I have one of those old copper Mirro cookie presses, Grandma used to make Spritz with colored sugar sprinkles every year, but no one likes those either. Pffft, they are NO fun. Now The Princess is coming today to make more cookies, so we'll have Christmas Cookies, Round Two! Plus cinnamon rolls today for those nice neighbors. Annie

My mother (with a family of 7, plus friends, grandparents, aunt...) used to bake scads of cookies for Christmas. We were spoiled for choice! Almond crescents, pecan balls, mini pecan tarts, date pinwheels, hermits, jam thumbprints, cut out sugar (with a touch of nutmeg), a cream cheese pastry dough filled with various fruits or nuts (can't remember the name). Sometimes she would make fudge. I am sure that I've forgotten a couple. Over the years I've made all of these, usually just 2 or 3 in small quantity (almost always including hermits) but as the DD grew up and I became prone to gaining too much weight in November and December, I am down to making just one small batch. This year it is gingerbread.

Not to be grabby, but I'll take the two flowers in the middle with sprinkles.

It's been a long time since I made cookies and I don't know why that is. Good for you!

Those are beautiful! Looks like spring time, but probably tastes better than pollen, bugs, and pecan tree blossoms! LOL!

Yes, please, I'd like one of the cookies with white frosting. Never too much sugar, you know. (grin)

I bake cookies when the grandkids are here, which is not often enough. I did just bake chocolate chip cookies for my son in law's birthday, and I made no-bake oatmeal cookies before that. So, maybe once a month, mostly drop cookies or bar cookies, not those lovely cutouts.

I rarely bake cookies. In fact, I think its down to just at Christmas.

Christmas in May! Who needs a holiday to bake cookies? Those heart shaped cookies have my name on them, I'd say.

I hardly ever bake cookies and certainly nothing as fancy as these.

Thanks. When our daughter was in the Army, she said many relatives sent them Christmas cookies and they had an overload but rarely got any the rest of the year. That changed my cookie production for sending to her but also for ourselves.

Most of the doughs can be portioned and frozen so I can defrost a pack and bake a sheet or two of cookies without it becoming an all-day affair.
