How to Saute Mushrooms?

I always get so much liquid that I feel my mushrooms are steamed rather than sauteed. I now start my mushrooms in a hot pan with no butter or oil at all to try and get all the water out before adding butter. Sometimes I will use a paper towel to remove the liquid before adding the butter.

My gas stove is very old and I don't think it gets really hot - could this be my problem?
